Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

Hi, seth.

I rebooted by hitting Ctrl+Alt+Del after the system hanged for a few minutes on boot as usual.
What should I do next?

Thank you very much,
xenobro.

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

drwxr-sr-x+ 2 root systemd-journal 4096 set 27 10:11 journal

how come the time stamp is much older then the rest of directories?

# strings /var/log/journal/b1136321eb70450da894be72fca8e0ef/system.journal | grep -i message > /tmp/log

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

I hadn't even noticed that. And it's especially strange, since it was the last created directory. Let me boot up that drive and check the date.

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

I'm posting from that system now.
The system date is correct, only that folder is dated strangely.
Also, I cannot execute the command you posted, since there is nothing inside /var/log/journal, even during execution.
I could however find 2 directories under /run/log/journal:

strings /run/log/journal/b8b5*/system.journal | grep -i message >b8b5a78bc3dd446893d7ca9110a51b1b.txt

But both are related to the current boot, with getty.target.
Any ideas on that to do next?

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

If you have two computers, boot with getty.target

# systemctl enable sshd
# systemctl start sshd

reboot with multi-user.target and try ssh into it from another computer.

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

I only have this computer, could my Android cellphone ssh into it?
And I'm not sure it'd work, since this computer doesn't log in the wireless network automatically, I have to manually connect it every time.
Unless I could tell it to do it automatically with an ethernet cable, but how would I make it run dhcpcd on boot?

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

Ok, I found ConnectBot, an FOSS ssh client for Android, and I can connect my pc via ethernet cable to the modem. How do I make it connect to the network automatically on boot before it running sshd?

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

Typing commands from a sell phone is not recommended.
Why not backup your data and reinstall arch?

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

I was avoiding that, because reconfiguring everything is a long process... And the fact that it seems so close to fully working again is pretty frustrating...
I could backup what's important and basically clone the backup pendrive.
But if the problem is just corrupt packages or something like that, wouldn't telling the system to redownload and reinstall everything work also?
If so, would pacman -Syyuu do that?
Or maybe

pacman -Sy $(pacman -Qeq) --noconfirm

?
Or

# pacman -Qqn | pacman -S -

as the wiki suggests, under 2.8. But should I use "--overwrite=*" then?

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

You have these broken packages, reinstall them.

audit: 208 total files, 1 missing file
confuse: 29 total files, 3 missing files
epdfview: 100 total files, 25 missing files
filesystem: 120 total files, 1 missing file

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

Reinstalled those packages, same issues:
With getty.target, I have to log in as root and delete /run/nologin, otherwise I get this:

"System is booting up. Unprivileged users are not permitted to log in yet. Please come back later. For technical details, see pam_nologin(8)."
Login incorrect

And even after deleting /run/nologin, I can't startx because my folder doesn't exist, since it is created on the fly on RAM by a service that would run later.
With multi-user.target, I get the same errors and then the system hangs as usual.

Should I try to force reinstall everything? If so, which command do I use for it?

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

boot archlinux.iso image to repair packages like you did before.
and also check the health status of your pendrive

# smartclt -a /dev/sdX

Ok, but what command should I use to repair all packages once I'm arch-chrooted in archlinux.iso, after checking the health of the drive?

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

reinstall explicit installed package with archlinux.iso before arch-chroot.

Collect explicit installed package inside arch-chroot.
# pacman -Qeq >/tmp/all
Back out from arch-chroot
# pacstrap /mnt/ $(</tmp/all)

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

Won't pacstrap erase my configs on /etc - or even everything on the drive?
Can't I just redownload and reinstall all packages without reinstalling the system from scratch?

To re-install all packages but nb. that I haven't read the last couple of posts, so this might not work or solve the problem.

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

solskog, I booted archlinux.iso, checked the health status of the pendrive, arch-chrooted into it, reinstalled audit, confuse and filesystems and removed epdfview.
The problems continue as always, and smartctl -a /dev/sdb gave me this:

/dev/sdb: Unknown USB Bridge [0x0781:0x5583 (0x100)]
Please specify device type with the -d option

seth, thank you very much! Going to multi-user.target from getty.target works perfectly:
If I boot into getty.target as root, rm /run/nologin, systemctl start multi-user.target, exit and log in as my user, everything works: pavucontrol, the service that creates my folder on RAM, etc.
But trying to boot into getty.target as my user first gives me the "unprivileged users" error above, and trying to boot into multi-user.target gives me those "ordering cycle" errors and freezes the system as usual.

How should I proceed? Reinstall all packages? Or should I post the /run/log/journal since I've manually started multi-user?

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

But trying to boot into getty.target as my user first gives me the "unprivileged users" error above

That's normal, you'd simply log in as root and start the multi-user.target from there.
And yes, then please post the journal from the multi-user.target (wait a minute or so before starting it, so the gap is visible in the journal)

This is probably some race condition about the multi-user target relying on something that's not yet initialized…

That's normal

That's the thing, it wasn't: until this started to happen, I had never had these issues before, nor the "unprivileged users" error nor having to boot into getty.target and then manually go to multi, and now it happens literally at every single boot.
Of course, it's much better that I've finally can access my system, but I'd like to go back to what it was before.
And possibly find out what happened, so I can update the system again, the backup, etc. without risking this happening again.

But anyway, what should I do now? How should I proceed?
Once again, thank you very much,

Re: [SOLVED] "Failed to start Virtual Console Setup" after last update

solskog, here's the information you asked for:

# systemd-analyze critical-chain multi-user.target

The time when unit became active or started is printed after the "@" character.
The time the unit took to start is printed after the "+" character.

multi-user.target @9min 49.446s
└─dbus.service @5.627s +271ms
  └─dbus.socket @5.599s
    └─sysinit.target @5.599s
      └─systemd-resolved.service @5.250s +346ms
        └─systemd-tmpfiles-setup.service @5.052s +157ms
          └─local-fs.target @5.045s
            └─boot.mount @5.017s +26ms
              └─systemd-fsck@dev-disk-by\x2duuid-4354\x2d283A.service @4.447s +503ms

I had to put multi-user.target as an argument for this command.

I think the other two only reached getty.target, not multi-user.target:
