i follow this guide from the wiki:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS_Setup
i have installed cups and ghostscript.
also i have installed, foomatic-filters, hplip
i also download from here
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_print … skJet_710C
the PPD file, that suit my printer.
after that, i copy the file to /usr/share/cups/model/
after that i did:
modprobe lp
modprobe parport
modprobe parport_pc
no errors
started CUPS:
/etc/rc.d/cups start
go to:
http://localhost:631/
and added my printer using the PPD file, i downloaded before.
(i used LPT 1 for the printer, its a parallel printer, not usb)
this is the web interface with my printer details and status. also you can see the error, that said: "/usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed"
http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/6605/hpyj2.png
in buttom line, when i try to print, it's trying to print, but that's it, nothing happend. no printing. not even a noise from the printer :-)
after everything didn't work i tried to install more foomatic_* packages.
i installed(as i see in pacman -Qs):
foomatic-db 3.1-1
foomatic-db-engine 3.1-1
foomatic-db-ppd 20060411-2
and foomatic-filters 3.1-1
still, nothing is working
thanks

After a short glance over the linuxprinting page about your printer I think you need this: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … s=1&ID=696

The "hplip" package may help you.

EDIT: Heh... Seems it wouldn't... http://hplip.sourceforge.net/supported_ … orted.html

chrismortimore:
thanks for trying.
i alraedy install hplip, and now i know it's not supported my printer :-)
Mr Green:
thanks for the link.
do you think i should downgrade my packages(if yes, hoe can i do this)?
thanks :-)
Offline
well you could use ABS to rebuild packages ...or ask on forum if anyone has the packages you require in there pacman cache.... but I cannot say if it will help
from a quick google others are having problems with this printer
If you do not get anywhere with your printer then take a look at TurboPrint its not free but you could just check if they have your printer supported.

thanks.
now i remember that with a live cd(i think knoppix) before a long time i could print with this printer without do anything(out of the box).
but still, it doesn't help me :-)
thanks again

well you can configure printers under KDE ...
in Knoppix al the very least if it works . the you it may give you more of a clue ...l ie cups configs modules etc ...
Is the printer usb or parallel ?

A PPD file alone won't do anything for you. Just take a look at the file, it's calling pnm2ppa.

byte:
it's not just the PPD file.(yes i have this file, as i told before)
look again at my first post.
i did more things as describe in the cups wiki :-)
mr green:
it's a parallel printer

I've read your posts multiple times and you didn't mention pnm2ppa once. As that is the only driver supporting your printer you better install it -> http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … s=1&ID=696
(see http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR … NSUPPORTED if you don't know about AUR)

yeah I saw that on linux printing ... best to give a shot if you get stuck with AUR I will build it for you if that helps
make sure you have lp parport etc... modules loaded ... lsmod | grep parport [someone juump in if module name has changed!]

thanks byte
i evantually "remove my finger from my ass" == listen to you
and i can print
you are great
thanks a lot :-)
thanks for you also, mr green
but a little question i have.
it seems that i didn't have the fakeroot package so i pacman her.
but still even that the : export FAKEROOT="y"
is in there i couldn't build the package as a normal user.
evantually, i use sudo(root) for the building and it works good.
but if i can use the fakeroot, something isn't OK, i think.
i is this?
thanks

Where are you building them? ... I move directories from /var/abs/<foo> to my home [well /home/mrgreen/builds!] they should then build as user
yeah Fakeroot is a good idea
Take a look at aurbuild ;-)
Mr Green
Offline
well i builded them is /var/abs/local as suggested in the link that byte gave me.
maybe i should keep it in my ~/ directory and there i could have build it as a user.
thanks again :-)
i have another question that doesn't belong to this thread.
i have done:
sudo pacman -S abiword
and abiword installed.
but, when i try to open abiword, i get the splash screen(you know, the screen that comes up before the program starts. like many programs), and immediatly, the program exits, so i can't get to the main windows of abiword.
i started abiword from terminal and after it close, it says: Aborted
i dont have a clue why it is happening.
openoffice work fine.
thanks :-)

pacman -Qi abiword
What version you using? Do you get any errors when running in a term ? other than Aborted
And yes ... you are going Off Topic
