don't know what i updated to actually get it to not working, but gnome/gdm won't load, all i get is a cursor and a black screen.
think it might have been the newest nvidia, but i tried going back to the old and it will not work.
have re-written my xorg.conf multiple times, and it works to the point of getting the nvidia splash screen to show up (and at the proper res, which is a first for me, usually i use nvidia-x settings to get my screen res once in gnome)
fluxbox, openbox, and blackbox on the other hand work (at the wrong res though, i have to re-write xorg, conf again, and i think it will work)
i'm currently at work, but i can post any config files or anything if you need to see them, please just ask and i will post when i get home.
just posting to see if anyone else has come across this with a recent package update (and has a solution( or am i just alone on this one?
any help is greatly appreciated
(kind of a newbie with it here... i know my way around.. hell, i got fluxbox working in one hell of a good way now, thinking about keeping it as my wm, but at least would like to get back into gnome and grab all the commands for programs i don't use so frequently (which obviously i don't know) so i can build up my *box menus if i choose to use one of them 100% of the time.
thanks in advance

I just wanted to say that i have the same problem. Starting fluxbox then gnome-session via startx works fine, but starting gdm/gnome via the telint 5 method does not work, it stops loading at the waiting-cursor. A solution would be appreciated.

Putting exec gnome-session in .xinitrc and staring it that way works as a workaround, but yea, the gdm breakage is irritating. I can't find anything helpfull in the logs either.

Downgrade to libx11 from current if you're experiencing the hanging gdm problem. The version in testing is known to have this problem, but I'm unable to reproduce it. The problem appears only in some cases, which I don't know the conditions of.

I had this problem.
A simple
pacman -S current/libx11solved it for me
pacman -Ss libx11
testing/libx11 1.1.1-1
X11 client-side library
current/libx11 1.1-2
X11 client-side libraryFor whatever reason, there's a problem with the 1.1.1-1 version for a lot of people. Maybe this got you too. The 1.1-2 versions fixes the problem.
*edit- Well, he beat me too it. Didn't refresh before I came back to the page, but yeah. Same thing he said. ![]()

I tried downgrading libx11 some days ago, after it was mentioned as a posible fix on the irc channel. But for some strange reason it dosn't work for me. I'll probably rebuild gdm and libx11 with abs when i got the time/energy.
