Shut down freeze

Some times when I try to shut down the computer it freezes. The screen goes black and then nothing.
I'm using KDE, kernel 2.6 19. This problem predates 26 19. If I do ctrl alt del sometimes the hard drive light will flicker. I then turn off the computer. Some times (but not every time) when I restart I get a message that hda3 was not shut down properly.      :?:
