Overscan on old TV as second monitor and no option on the TV to fix it

I'm trying to use an old TV as a second monitor, but I'm getting overscan, and there's no option on the TV itself to fix it. Is there a way to fix this from Arch? Not sure what information is necessary to troubleshoot and/or fix this, but I'll be happy to provide anything.

As per this part of the Wiki I tried `xrandr --prop`, but there doesn't seem to be anything about underscan anywhere:

I also briefly tried using the `--transform` option mentioned below, but couldn't get the image right, and don't know how to figure out exactly what parameters I'd have to use for that.

Re: Overscan on old TV as second monitor and no option on the TV to fix it

Overscan compensation vastly depends on the used driver.

Re: Overscan on old TV as second monitor and no option on the TV to fix it

This is bad to begin with. Remove xf86-video-intel (you can also check whether that gets you the underscan parameter)

I also briefly tried using the `--transform` option mentioned below, but couldn't get the image right

And then please elaborate on your problems here.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xrandr … -transform explains the matrix, the correct values for your TV you'll have to get by trial-and-error  (whether you move/scale too much or too little; 20% downscale is probably way too much and then just shifting 35px probably way too little for a FullHD monitor)

I removed that, and tried `xrandr --prop` again, but still nothing about underscan that I can see (tried to `grep` for it too):

As for `--transform`, maybe I'll just have to try even more, it just seemed like no matter what I tried there was still some overscan at the bottom, and for some parameters there was a weird line on the left side of the screen that looked like it was part of the built-in display; also, it's not a full-HD TV, the resolution of it is 1368x768.

Re: Overscan on old TV as second monitor and no option on the TV to fix it

The HDMI in your xrandr output is unused but defaults to interlaced 1920x1080 and doesn't support 1368x768 ?
Try

xrandr --output HDMI1 --transform 0.9,0,-96,0,0.9,-54,0,0,1

Huh, that doesn't quite make sense, because the other screen was plugged in and working when I fetched that information. It should've been used; what exactly is going on there?

I also tried that `--transform` you just posted, and it does not give the correct result at all, there's still overscan at the top, bottom, and right side of the screen, whereas the left side (which is connected to the other) has the same problem I mentioned earlier, i.e. there's a strip that looks like it's from the primary display showing on the left, but that strip is even larger than when I was trying different parameters myself.

Re: Overscan on old TV as second monitor and no option on the TV to fix it

idk, but

HDMI1 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
…
   1920x1080i 60.00 + 50.00 59.94
   1280x720 60.00 50.00 59.94
   1440x480i 59.94
   720x576 50.00
   720x576i 50.00
   720x480 60.00 59.94
   720x480i 60.00 59.94
   640x480 60.00 59.94

"1920x1080i    60.00 +  50.00    59.94 "  means that the 1920x1080i@60Hz is the default ("+") but not used (no "*" anywhere, but maybe I need glasses)
What does "xrandr -q" currently look like, are there any adapters involved?
wrt. the transformation, try it w/ the TV being the only output.

wrt. the transformation, try it w/ the TV being the only output.

The output from `xrandr -q` does show a `*` in the appropriate place (the only two alternatives for resolution are 1920x1080i or 1280x720, but the former only had a maximum refresh rate of 30 Hz, and as mentioned above the TV doesn't have that resolution anyway, so I opted for the latter):

And there are no adapters involved as far as I'm aware.

I tried running the `--transform` you mentioned with only the TV as the output, and now the outcome is a bit different: there's a black margin on the left and top sides where the cursor can't pass, so I'm assuming that means the image is moved too much, and the bottom seems to have been adjusted correctly, if there's still overscan there it can't be more than a pixel or two judging by the cursor, on the right side there's still overscan.

Well, much fun adjusting the values from there smile
Try shifting by 64 & 36 px (which should™ at least center the 10% downscale of 1280x720)

So there's no hope for any automatic underscan adjustment based on the other information?

Also, I don't see why I should be adjusting with only the TV as output when that yields such different results; after all I'm looking to have it in addition and not to use it as the only monitor.

No, and it was neither available w/ the intel driver.

Also, I don't see why I should be adjusting with only the TV  as output when that yields such different results

You don't have to and I don't think you'll see much different results - they just have different appearances because of the second output.
The same transformation matrix should™ work regardless of the second output, but you might have to adjust the output position as well.
