due to some error in updating my arch linux, it now no longer boots.
i removed the internal hard disk and attached an external disk via USB which i last used in 2015.
It boots fine. but trying to upgrade to newest version I get the following:

It's going to be much, much easier to do a reinstall here. You'd have to follow all of the manual interventions between that timeframe https://archlinux.org/news/ where also the packaging format changed so you'd need to use a static build of pacman.
But maybe elaborate on the issues you had on the other disk, that might be more salvageable
