I am running arch on a laptop and was wondering if there is a patch to get the acpi working properly...I have tried the 2.5.x kernel and got it working but there were so many other weird things that were happening with it. I am wondering if there is a patch that i could apply besides the 2.4.21pre4 that might help get the acpi working. Dunno if anyone else is messing with laptops but if you have had any success please post a reply.
Thanx,

What type of laptop is it? I run mine on a Sony Vaio PCG-R505EL. If you have an R505 I can tell you what I did and everything should work. If it's something else I can just give less specific advice.
The acpi patches are from http://sourceforge.net/projects/acpi/. It looks like you just download the patch file for the kernel that you want to run. From there you should be able to patch your kernel, compile, and install it.
Hope that helps.

Unfortunately, my laptop is old enough to still use APM. However, please post any relevant info you can as we are collecting stuff for documentation purposes.

Looks like the battery is the problem. I now know why it is important to research before you buy a laptop.

i may be off base as i dont own a laptop.. but ive seen in the kernel config fur certain chipsets u need to enable certain options or ur fuck outta luck. or possibly one of the acpi options u dont need.. like say 'only enable if chipset x is present' kinda thing.

I got rid of the embedded controller but i do need the battery and that fails majorly on startup...i guess i'll have to wait until kernel 2.6 comes out this summer

You got those messages after using the acpi patch?

I didn't apply any ACPI patch unless in the kernel patch. All i know is that when i use the current 2.5.x i can compile it to work and with this one i can't. Shouldn't there be a patch for this kernel that would fix the acpi? It sounds like the acpi in the 2.4.20/2.4.21pre4 works on some but not on all, i guess i need to do a little more research before i buy a laptop next time

If i have learnt anything in my short amount of time using linux, it is how fast things go. Buy what you like, the linux community shall support it over time. I have a Dell 500m my acpi doesn't work (like can you throttle your cpu?) waiting for the new kernel...

I guess my support is a little late... but you want to apply the acpi patches. Google for acpi linux, that should give you what you're looking for.

I have a compaq presario 724ea that uses only acpi & has a buggy bios too, so I'd share my experiences with acpi on linux.
Either use the latest kernel-2.6-testXX or kernel-2.4.22 with the latest patch from http://acpi.sf.net (that's what I use), or the latest 2.4.23-preXX that includes the acpi patches. Also grab my acpi.tar.bz2 pkg from incoming & install it. Kernels <2.4.22 have problematic acpi support & maybe that's the cause of your malfunctioning battery. Make sure to check the DSDT pages on acpi.sf.net & in case your notebook is listed on the black list (like mine ) you'd have to create a custom dsdt, according to the instructions on that page.

Completely OT: kernel 2.6.0 will be most propably released at xmas. Current 2.6.0-test7 initialized the "stability-freeze" process .
