If you're referring to the part where you greppe the strace for "sss", that's irrelevant this hypothesis.
strace -f … 2>&1 | grep -E 'EACCES|EPERM'
Another thing, assuming you logged into the unprivileged test user, but always used "sudo" to test as root
sudo -u <unpriv_test_user> …
sudo drops the environment as a side effect and cuts you of the session bus etc. …

According to the newest Stellaris Dev Diary #323, the crash issue on Linux should be addressed in the coming 3.10.2 version.
For now, we have two working options (I've tested both and they work for me):
1) Running the game directly without Steam, which needs to be OFF!
2) The way mentioned in the Dev Diary
Some notes for Linux users that are encountering crashes - we have potential workarounds for two of them:
If you are crashing on startup, players have reported that starting Steam, disabling the internet, then loading the game bypasses the issue. Internet can be reenabled afterwards.
If you are crashing while hosting a multiplayer game on Ubuntu 20.04, switching to Cross Platform multiplayer appears to resolve the issue. It is also not present on Ubuntu 22.04.
At this time we are still tracking down Mac stability issues.
3.10.2 is already in progress, in which we are continuing to hunt down stability problems (especially for Linux and Mac users), fixing more bugs, and adding more customization to the Tabbed Outliner.
"... being a Linux user is sort of like living in a house inhabited by a large family of carpenters and architects. Every morning when you wake up, the house is a little different. Maybe there is a new turret, or some walls have moved. Or perhaps someone has temporarily removed the floor under your bed."

Beta for 3.10.2 open now, even though its mentioned in beta announcement (crash on startup fix for macos +other Os's) game still crashing with steam open on arch linux. So until now 2 ways mentioned above are still the only way till full 3.10.2 version releases (hopefully).

Stellaris 3.10.2 released but only Mac crash issue has been addressed. Unfortunately Paradox didn't mention the're planning to make a fix for Linux launcher crash in the upcoming 3.10.3 and 3.10.4 versions
