Sorry if this is wrong place to post this but im newbie so i think its right ?
I did xrandr --output (output) --mode 1280x1024 and it stretched the screen out to the sides . I dont want that . I want it to fit the screen and not stretch it out , leaving black bars at the sides or top and bottom if applicable .
I tried doing xrandr --output (output) --set "scaling mode" "Full aspect" but it gave me an error
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 11 (RRQueryOutputProperty)
Serial number of failed request: 50
Current serial number in output stream: 50
The output name is correct i dont know what to do ive been struggling with this for soooooo long . Monitor doesnt give such a option . In windows i was able to change scaling in nvidia control panel , but nvidia-settings doesnt seem to have an option like that on linux ?

What did you end up doing to solve it?

If you are trying to map a game's resolution to your screen, I think gamescope - https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Gamescope - can do that.
