[SOLVED] efivars partition full

Hello,

I've been getting a Gnome alert lately about the efivars partition being full... and indeed it is:

$ df -h /sys/firmware/efi/efivars 
Filesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
efivarfs        128K  126K     0 100% /sys/firmware/efi/efivars

However my system has had no issues whatsoever so far. Anybody knows if this can cause issues later on?

I have no real idea what the files in there are used for - and I don't really want to remove one and brick my firmware...

The `dump-type0` files look like they're created by systemd as a way to preserve kernel core dumps across reboots, but they take up a tiny portion of the used space so removing them wouldn't really fix my issue. No idea about the rest.

Actually I have found this post while looking for a possible solutions. The option of changing to "ro" the efivars folder might be a band-aid, provided that no critical application needs to write there, but it looks to me as something anomalous happening recently. My system has been installed more than 8 year ago and has run flawlessly since there. Only in the last weeks I noticed the free space in the efivarfs partition shrinking more and more. Is there any command or settings in configuration files to check in order to identify the process responsible of these writings? It looks to me that something is written at the boot time in all files.

Does disabling the pstore "feature" in systemd help? Check Awebb's link for the details.

In your case the ro "band aid" might be needed because your UEFI implementation sucks. This is not uncommon.

What I've realized is if I have a lot of boot entries or signed kernels saved into NVRAM it'll erroneously fill up the space on the mobo.

A few generations ago clearing close used to also clear the UEFI variables as well. But now most of them seem to be persistant.

One little trick if you have AMI bios is you can use something like 

shellx64.efi

or the onboard UEFI shell and actually clear them from the UEFI environment using 

dmpstore -d -all

. The system critical variables should be write protected and all others added over time should be deleted and/or re-added over time if they were important to runtime.

PLEASE NOTE: That on older boards (think pre z590/Intel 10th gen) this can actually brick your system. Particularly if you do not have a function to flash the board externally. If in doubt. DON'T do it.

With that being said I can speak for most consumer boards newer than 11th gen Intel it simply has the same function as clearing the CMOS.

To be fair my UEFI might very well suck; this is a rather old ASUS laptop (Intel 6th generation), and there are plenty of things that suck on it... and I wouldn't touch the vendors UEFI implementation with a 10m-long pole wink

I actually ended up solving this inadvertently when I installed a firmware update with `sudo fwupdmgr get-updates` — that cleared something like 40 kB of the UEFI space. I'm not sure exactly what happened there, but I'll live by "if it works don't fix it".
