[SOLVED] KDE Plasma Wayland crashes on startup

Hello everyone!

I always used KDE Plasma on X11 as my DE and it always worked perfectly. Given the approaching switch to Wayland as the default version I wanted to test it now to avoid surprises.

Problem:
I checked the Wayland version every new Plasma release, but every time the session crashes. I can see the desktop wallpaper for a fraction of a second, then the screen becomes black. The UI never loads and the mouse's right click doesn't open the menu. I can only see the mouse arrow.
All the rest works: I can open programs with KRunner or the terminal, play 2D and 3D games and watch videos.

What I tried to do but was ineffective:
Cleaning the cache with

$ rm -rf ~/.cache/*

doesn't solve the issue.

Journal log:
https://go.0xfc.de/v3fgq0

My system:
[OS] Arch Linux, Kernel: 6.6.7-arch1-1
[DE] KDE Plasma
[CPU] AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
[MB] MSI B450M MORTAR MAX (MS-7B89), BIOS 2.80
[Memory] RAM: 16 GB
[Graphics] AMD Radeon RX 570
[Main storage] NVME KINGSTON SA2000M8250G

If I have forgot any useful info tell me what's missing and I'll add it as soon as I can. Thanks!

Fwiw you might want to test on plasma 6, instead of plasma 5. Plasma 6 will be released next February, and plasma 5 is no longer actively developed. I am also under the impression that plasma 6 contains a lot of fixes for wayland.

If you plan to do so,
a pretty harmless way to try would be to use the neon unstable ISO [0] and see if you can login to the wayland session. If you can not you should submit a bug report to KDE.

You could also use the kde-unstable repo [1], which currently contains plasma 6 beta 1. But before doing so remember to back up your system.

Re: [SOLVED] KDE Plasma Wayland crashes on startup

Hi fanzhuyifan, thanks for the suggestion.

I tested the live version of KDE Neon (User edition) and I could switch to wayland without problems, so at least I know wayland works on my hardware. Maybe the crash is originated by some configuration or incompatible widget.

Ideally you would also want to test on Neon *unstable*, which contains plasma 6, the upcoming release.

It's good to know that the your hardware seems supported. Now we just need to find the configuration issue..

Re: [SOLVED] KDE Plasma Wayland crashes on startup

Luckily I found the culprit pretty fast: virtual-desktop-bar, which doesn't support wayland for now.

Apparently there's a wayland fork of it, but I have to test it yet.
