The whole desktop stuttering when launching some applications

Some applications makes the whole my desktop stutter. In the following video you can see this by the movement of the mouse cursor: https://youtu.be/cutrczVuBLY

This usually applies to various Windows applications with a custom appearance running under Wine/Proton, but sometimes it also happens to some Linux applications. For example, in the video I launched Native Steam. The same thing happens, for example, with GOG Galaxy under Wine. At first I thought this would apply to any application that uses CEF (Chrome Embedded Framework), but there are examples of CEF applications that do not cause this problem. I don't know how else to generalize problematic applications.

My CPU is Intel Core i7-4770K 8 x 3.5GHz and GPU is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti. Not the most modern setup but still not that bad to feel troubles rendering such application.

I tried installing the zen kernel (before that I was using the original linux kernel), changing the desktop environment (under XFCE4 the problem remains), installing the latest version of the video driver (I'm currently using nvidia 535 because of this issue) - none of this helped.

Does anyone have ideas what may cause such issue, how to diagnose and how it can be fixed?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: The whole desktop stuttering when launching some applications

Totally no. vkcube runs just fine. I play modern DirectX games under proton and no stuttering there. I recently completed Lies of P without a single freeze or FPS drop. Only desktop applications with custom L&F like Steam, LoL client, GOG Galaxy etc. cause the issue. But not even every such application.

Re: The whole desktop stuttering when launching some applications

Actually looking at the video, is the cursor the only thing affected?
What is you play some video parallel to running the offending clients and leave the mouse alone, does the video playback stall as well?

Also please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
(The cursor is by default rendered in HW and should be pretty much the only thing unaffected by any stalls in the displayserver/compositor)

I've just tried to play video on youtube and local video in haruna in parallel: picture is stuttering too, but sound is ok. But there is one more strange thing: if I speak with someone in discord, his voice is stuttering too. It is the main problem: because of it I can't play league with my friends.

Here is my /var/log/Xorg.0.log: https://0x0.st/HguC.txt

Re: The whole desktop stuttering when launching some applications

Enable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting in general and to get rid of the simpledrm device.
This is a hybrid graphics system, but all outputs are attached to the nvidia GPU and the server is running on it, if you can, disable the IGP in the BIOS/UEFI.

!!! Something is polling the nvidia outputs every 100ms !!!
Idk what that is (some client, likely - it's equivalent to "xrandr -q") but this is most likely the explanation for the symptoms you're getting.

If this doesn't go away by nuking the simpledrm device and (ideally) deactivating the IGP, please tail the xorg log and see whether it correlates w/ the troublecausing clients.
Since this is a hybrid system running on the "wrong" chip, are those clients possibly accidentally DRI_PRIME'ing on the intel chip?

Looks like it helped with LoL, it now runs just fine! Thank you!

But nothing changed with Steam: the same messages in Xorg log: Xtrfy mouse events loss and display disconnections. This is not critical, because it goes away some time after the start, but it’s still interesting why the problem was only partially solved.

The output polls in the xorg log coincide w/ steam runs?

I guess steam allows you to query the render somewhere? (No, I'm old. I don't rent games)

Yes.

But I completely disabled integrated graphics is BIOS. System is not hybrid anymore, is it?

To query the render somewhere? I don't understand what do you exactly mean.

Check the hardware/support information in the help settings of steam

You didn't mention this approach before - does the IGP still show up in your xorg log?

If you are talking about this line:

[     5.465] (==) Matched intel as autoconfigured driver 3

then no, it is not present anymore.

"Is there a card1"?

Steam seems to be doing funny randr business, though: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=291271
Do you also get a ridiculous amount of output polling in your xorg log coinciding w steam runs?

Looks like.
Looks like a steam specific issue… maybe only w/ nvidia.
