dual boot windows 10 and archlinux - unable to boot now

I hope somebody can help me get my sons Archlinux system back up and running.

my son has been learning and using arch linux on a dual boot system ( he uses Arch and I use Windows)  along with windows 10. a month or so ago the system stopped presenting the OS select menu on boot up and started to auto go into Archlinux.

Today I attempted to have a go and see why it was no longer giving the option to select the OS.  I had a backup (mirrored) Windows drive from a few months ago, so I plugged that into the system. and got the system go straight into Windows. However when I took that drive out we can no longer boot into Archlinux now. Even with the windows disk out of the system we get the windows boot up screen with the troubleshooting options.

I have downloaded the latest ISO and booted into the live Archlinux. Below are some of the outputs from various commands I have run.

The efibootmgr output shows you have no boot entries for Arch, just 2 (?) Windows entries.

Arch's boot entry can be recreated with efibootmgr or by mounting all the system partitions, using `arch-chroot` then re-running the command used to install the bootloader to the disk, just as you did when installing Arch. I can't be any more specific because you haven't mentioned which bootloader was in use.

Thanks for the reply. I have update the post with the code tags.

This is the problem we don't know which bootloader was used. My son installed Arch with help of a friend and we have no idea what was used at the time. Anyway we can find out ?

The EFI system partition will offer us some clues so mount it from the live ISO:

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt

Then run this command to show the contents and share the output here:

find /mnt

So this should re-create the boot entry from the live ISO:

efibootmgr --create --label 'Arch' --loader '/EFI/systemd/systemd-bootx64.efi'

Then reboot to test.

Thanks very much for the help. I can now login to Archlinux again.


I need to fix the dual boot for windows 10 , but will create a separate thread for it.
