Boxes behind popup windows in Google Chrome

The issue appeared when the google-chrome (stable) was updated to the new look. Same problem occurs in chromium. There is also this box around the menu popup. Strangely, it does not appear in case of the extensions popup which looks fine.

I am running i3 as window manager. The glitch occurs both when compositor is and is not running (as on the screenshot). I've disabled everything I can think of and started i3wm with initial configuration but the issue still persists.

The recent version of Chrome appears to have a bug. As a temporary solution, you can disable the new UI.

what compositor do you have?

I had the same problem and just running picom fixes the issues.

PS: you will experience the same issue with other gtk application using a floating windows
