[Solved] NetworkManager: Device not managed

Hi all!

I have a problem with NetworkManager. I initially set up wifi through iwd, then wanted to switch to NM which worked, but I experienced frequent connection drops so I deinstalled NM again.
Now, a few months later I thought of giving NM another try, however after reinstalling NM the nm-applet shows "Device not managed" and I can't get it to work.
Currently wifi still works through iwd. I tried different things over the past weeks, however I guess by now I broke things more than I fixed them. orz

Anyway, I would appreciate if someone could lend me a hand to get NetworkManager to work and clean up the mess I probably made.

My system is up to date, DE is xfce4.

Here are some logs and command outputs that might be relevant:

From what I read in the wiki I should remove the competing networking services, however I'm not sure what to remove without completely breaking the currently still working wifi setup.

cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state

[main]
NetworkingEnabled=false
WirelessEnabled=true
WWANEnabled=true

/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf as well as /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/ are empty.

I found this post: https://askubuntu.com/questions/71159/n … ot-managed however, it didn't work for me, /etc/network/interfaces doesn't exist on my machine.

nmcli device gave me this output:

DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
lo loopback unmanaged --
wlan0 wifi unmanaged --
wg-mullvad wireguard unmanaged --

So I tried to change the state of the wlan0 interface with this command:

nmcli device set wlan0 managed yes

However the state doesn't persist.

Thanks in advance!

Re: [Solved] NetworkManager: Device not managed

If you want to use NM with iwd disable iwd.service and follow https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Networ … Fi_backend. Having both services enabled will cause conflicts.

Don't know if that WireGuard connection will cause problems though, I don't use VPNs.

Re: [Solved] NetworkManager: Device not managed

Thanks for the reply.
I disabled iwd.service and added the config files as described in the wiki.
Wifi is still working, though NM still says device not managed.

Re: [Solved] NetworkManager: Device not managed

the nm-applet shows "Device not managed" and I can't get it to work

*what* device?
Please don't grep, post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

When I click the tray icon of the nm-applet the popup only says WIFI-Network and below greyed out "Device not managed".
I presume the device in question is the wifi interface.

Complete output of journalctl -b

Re: [Solved] NetworkManager: Device not managed

Disable systemd-networkd - NM doesn't indicate any unmanaged devices so it's either that or a bug in the applet.

Re: [Solved] NetworkManager: Device not managed

I disabled systemd-networkd as suggested. I still get the „Device not managed“, but now the wifi is broken too. I no longer have internet…

Re: [Solved] NetworkManager: Device not managed

I had to start systemd-networkd to get the internet back up again to post the journal...

Did you https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Iwd#En … figuration ?
Disable that if you want to use NM.

Re: [Solved] NetworkManager: Device not managed

/etc/iwd/main.conf doesn't exist, so I presume I didn't set up DHCP with iwd.

Re: [Solved] NetworkManager: Device not managed

Are there other iwd config files?
NM connects using iwd but never even tries to obtain a lease, did you configure a static IP or dhcp for that connection?
What's the output of "ip a" (w/o! starting networkd or anything else)

Does it work w/ NM + wpa_supplicant ?

Re: [Solved] NetworkManager: Device not managed

I got it to work. Though, I have no idea what I did. I simply rebooted again and now it's working.
Thanks for all the help!

Re: [Solved] NetworkManager: Device not managed

Maybe post the last journal to record the expected behavior, in case it fails w/ future boots.

Looks similar except NM is now also starting the expected dhcp requests - *shrug*
