While trying to setup all-ways-egpu with a Wayland session (tried with Sway and Plasma-wayland), I was always getting a "No card set as primary" error:
$ sudo all-ways-egpu set-compositor-primary egpu
No card set as primary(that's using all-ways-egpu Method 2; other methods don't work too)
So I went to debug it line-by-line, and found out that it iterates over '/dev/dri/card*' and checks for matches with the pre-configured egpu pci path(s). Turns out I have only one card:
$ ls /dev/dri/card*
/dev/dri/card1and it's my internal dGPU (Intel iGPU is disabled, for G-SYNC to work in Windows):
$ udevadm info -n /dev/dri/card1 -q path
/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:00.0/drm/card1so all-ways-egpu can't find my eGPU
The eGPU works, I can see it in 'nvidia-smi' queries, and also can launch CUDA code on it.
I should note that I had to add this config to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d:

nvidia-dkms 545.29.06-1Is that missing "/dev/dri/card*" device for my eGPU really an issue and the cause for all-ways-egpu not working? Is it a driver issue? I couldn't see any mentions of '/dev/dri/card*' in 'dmesg', and don't know where to look for the cause of this (miss?)behaviour.

After some googling and experimenting, I found out that /dev/dri/card* from Nvidia GPU(s) get populated when nvidia_drm kernel module gets loaded. This clearly happens too early, before my eGPU gets connected. If I disable the display manager service, login in the tty and do this:
sudo rmmod nvidia_drm && sudo modprobe nvidia_drmand start the display manager, then together with the installed and configured egpu-switcher, everything works great in Plasma X11 session.
I was wondering, is it possible to somehow automate this? Thanks

Why would that module be loaded at all if there's no present nvidia GPU.

Well, the thing is there is one present! I have an Intel iGPU, an Nvidia dGPU (RTX 2060) and an Nvidia eGPU (RTX 4070Ti). iGPU is disabled (since G-Sync doesn't work in Optimus mode, even via eGPU, and I can tell the difference when I seldomly play games in Windows 11), but dGPU is there and probably gets nvidia_drm loaded before eGPU is available.

DRM kernel mode setting ("options nvidia_drm modeset=1 fbdev=1") was already done, I was experimenting with Wayland too, and this is a requirement according to the wiki, and here's the boot log, from the tty console: http://0x0.st/HEVz.txt

Ah, I kinda mangled the description of the iGPU situation.
Since you're using it, https://github.com/hertg/egpu-switcher supports hooks (scripts that run when you un/plug the eGPU)

If the usage is transient, you could try to wait for it, in doubt w/ a forked subshell.

It works in the following scenario:
* disable the display manager (systemctl disable sddm)
* reboot and login to the tty
* "rmmod + modprobe" in one command: screen blinks, and all good (if only rmmod, then stuck with a black screen)
* launch sddm with "systemctl start sddm"
* login to Plasma X11
* external screen via eGPU + laptop one via dGPU both work now

I'm not sure what's blocking it for egpu-switcher. I thought it could be the xorg server, since I can't do it in an X session always getting the same error, but egpu-switcher is supposed to run before xorg starts. I will now write a systemd service to reload nvidia_drm with a 1 second retry interval, and launch it with the hook by egpy-switcher

I created a service, which infinitely tries to reload nvidia_drm with 1 second interval, which gets launched by the egpu-switcher hook, but it never succeeds, I think that when egpu-switcher starts, nvidia_drm is indeed used already, but somehow attached to the tty, before starting sddm, it can be done.

With multi-user.target booted, egpu-switcher service doesn't get started at all. I can manually reload the nvidia_drm kernel module, then start sddm and plasma-X11, and it works fine thanks to the xorg.conf.d/99-egpu-switcher.conf created by egpu-switcher for the previous boot:

If I move egpu.service from graphical.target.wants to multi-user.target.wants, and boot multi-user.target, then the hook works, either while I'm logging in to the tty (the screen blinks), or a bit earlier. Is it possible that egpu-switcher runs the hook too late, after SDDM starts, and the started xorg server occupies nvidia_drm? Though egpu.service has "Before=display-manager.service" Unit entry, so IDK ![]()
UPD
With the scenario above, looks like the redrm.service, launched by the hook, succeeded only from the second try. Here's the relevant part of the boot log:

I found a solution that works for me: I changed "rmmod nvidia_drm && modprobe nvidia_drm" in the hook script to "rmmod --force nvidia_drm && modprobe nvidia_drm", and it works fine now with the graphical.target. I'm unsure though whether it is fine to do so ![]()

Very silly for me not to read the manual, thank you. It also says:
Most users will want to use modprobe(8) with the -r option instead since it removes unused dependent modules as well.
And it works! Changing the script to "modprobe -r nvidia_drm && modprobe nvidia_drm" does the trick, looks like "nvidia_drm" is used by some unused module(s) when the egpu-switcher hook is called, and they can be all safely removed together (recursively I guess).
I should probably create an issue there, good point. Maybe some time after the New Year, after I test the workaround a bit.

After some more testing, it appears that sometimes "modprobe -r nvidia_drm" fails too. So I decided to give it a go repeatedly, but not in a detached shell, since we do need for egpu-switcher (and respectively the display manager) to wait before the module is reloaded (otherwise xorg server starts and it's impossible to reload the module without stopping it):
