After a recent Arch update, I found I could not log into my system. I did remove several orphaned packages but aside from that, there were no issues with the update as far as I could tell. But on reboot, the sddm display manager showed a blank screen. I tried with lightdm, with the same result. Then I disabled the display manager altogether and tried to connect with startx. I got a connection refused by the server error. Here is the log:

Using the intel ddx on a Kaby Lake iGPU is a terrible idea.
Online
I unistalled the xf86-video-intel drivers and installed the mesa-amber video package, enabled sddm and now it is working. Still have the question though, as to why all of a sudden it broke, since I have been using the system for a year now (vanilla Arch + i3) with no problems.
Offline
you either uninstall the intel ddx OR install mesa-amber, not both. For Kaby lake, you don't want to be anywhere near mesa-amber.
Your setup has been broken since the start and it's falling back to software rendering. New mesa has a bug in swrast, but you should have never been hitting that anyway.

It's not, you're using the legacy driver. You do NOT want mesa-amber.
Online
OK, so what do I do? Unistall mesa-amber? And install which driver?
Offline
just install mesa, it'll remove mesa-amber.
Online
Got it. Can you explain what happened to my system in the first place? After an update, I got a blank sddm screen, and was not able to start my wm with xinit or startx. I removed the xf86-video-intel drivers (and now the mesa-amber) and installed mesa. Now my system runs as expected. I thought removal of the xf86-video-intel drivers would make the system automatically fall back on modesetting. And mesa is just a set of (open-source) drivers for Intel graphics. What does this have to do with the original problem?
Offline
You should have never had xf86-video-intel installed in the first place. Ever since the legacy drivers were split off into mesa-amber, your system has been broken and falling back to software rendering. The mesa update broke software rendering, so it went from broken to broken and unusable.
Online
Yes, ok, that makes sense. My system is a vanilla Arch setup, that I installed following the Arch Wiki. I think I needed the xf86-video-intel for xbacklight with i3wm, the wm I chose. I wonder if the offending driver was also the reason I could never get a stable system with the zen kernel, always has to use lts. Anyway, marking as solved.
