[solved] mesa: dropped old drivers for i965 - replaced w. iris/crocus

Since the latest mesa update (1:23.3.1-1 -> 1:23.3.2-1) Xorg is unable to load the i965_dri.so driver:

AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/i965_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/i965_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

I have an Intel HD P530 chip - which belongs to a Gen 9 Intel CPU. I am wondering about some things:

1) According to OpenGL Gen 9 chips should be supported by both - mesa and mesa-amber packages.

2) At the documentation at docs.mesa3d.org they say that some old drivers have been moved into the mesa-amber branch. They also say that users of the old drivers should migrate:

Users with Intel GPUs that were using i965 should migrate to either Iris or Crocus, depending on their GPU. These drivers generally speaking both perform better and have more features than i965 had, and due to sharing more code with the rest of the Mesa infrastructure, gets more bug fixes and features.

How do I achieve that the xorg intel driver does not try to load the i965_dri.so module but iris_dri.so or crocus_dri.so instead?

No, it hasn't been able to load i965_dri.so since mesa split off amber. Your setup has been broken since then and using software rendering. You either switch to the modesetting ddx, getting rid of the intel one, or you install mesa-amber. Generally modesetting/mesa is the superior choice, but your setup is old enough that intel/amber may be at least a not-terrible option.

Re: [solved] mesa: dropped old drivers for i965 - replaced w. iris/crocus

What worked for me was manually setting the iris driver for gen 9 chips in

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Section "Device"
  Identifier "intelgpu0"
  Driver "intel"
  Option "DRI" "iris"
EndSection

See xf86-driver-intel manpage

This makes the xorg intel driver load the /usr/lib/dri/iris_dri.so instead of the non-existent /usr/lib/dri/i965_dri.so.

Sure?

Option "DRI" "boolean"

Disable or enable DRI support.

Default: DRI is enabled for configurations where it is supported.

Is there some reason you need the old, abandoned, deprecated intel driver?

Thats the combination that works for me together with bumblebee, the intel-virtual-output tool and with working displaylink drivers for my external USB-C monitor...

Using the intel driver was the key for me to make all three things work.

Re: [solved] mesa: dropped old drivers for i965 - replaced w. iris/crocus

evdi doesn't show up in your xorg log and why are you using bumblebee w/ a GM107GLM maxwell (supported by the 5xxxx drivers) chip?
Maybe you've a avery specific setup, but it rather sounds like you want to take a closer look at the general approach.

In the manpage of the intel driver they say the DRI option can also be the name of a driver to load.

Disable or enable DRI support. A driver name to use can be provided instead of simple boolean value, which will be passed to the GL implementation for it to load the appropriate backend. Alternatively the maximum level of DRI to enable (e.g. "1", "2" or "3") can be specified.

Default: All levels of DRI are enabled for configurations where it is supported.

evdi doesn't show up in your xorg log

Maybe because currently there is no such device connected.

and why are you using bumblebee w/ a GM107GLM maxwell (supported by the 5xxxx drivers) chip?

I was follwing the wiki entry for my laptop to make the external hdmi work. It links to a bumblebee article: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Lenovo … ics_in_X11

You are right - the old mesa version did not work with DRI. But somehow it managed to at least start an XServer and show me the login screen:

Using the new mesa version the screen stayed at the console and no XServer came up. I could fix that now by telling the intel driver to load the iris driver instead of the i965.

Re: [solved] mesa: dropped old drivers for i965 - replaced w. iris/crocus

That link explains the bumblebee approach for regular reverse prime, it has nothing to do w/ evdi and the entire wiki page doesn't talk about that.

It might be worthwile to explore what is the de-facto standard out-of-the box approach since a couple of years.
Remove bumblebee and xf86-video-intel, then see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PRIME#Reverse_PRIME though you should™ not have to configure anything for that.
If you want to try this and it doesn't work, please post an updated xorg log for a critical attempt (ie. if evdi does somehow notwork, the log should cover a server w/ the displaylink output attached)
