Displaylink: external displays keep crashing

Hello guys

I have two external LG displays connected via a HP USB-C hub. They turn on during boot, show up in system settings and display my wallpaper, Unfortunately however, as soon as I try to interact with them in any way (move the cursor over, move a folder over, start an application on one of the screens) they disconnect and reconnect, rendering them unusable.

I'm using the kernel 6.6.8-arch1-1, evdi 1.14.1-0 and Displaylink 5.8-1.

The output of

systemctl status displaylink.service

is:

 ● displaylink.service - DisplayLink Manager Service
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/displaylink.service; enabled; preset: di>
    Drop-In: /usr/lib/systemd/system/displaylink.service.d

    Process: 12149 ExecStartPost=/bin/sleep 1 (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
    Process: 12166 ExecStartPost=/usr/bin/run_as_users_with_display systemctl --user >

     CGroup: /system.slice/displaylink.service
             └─12148 /usr/lib/displaylink/DisplayLinkManager

Any ideas as to what I could do to get them working?

Thanks! smile

DisplayLink requires very specfic hardware and the chance of an HP USB-C hub using it is very small.

What is the exact type of model of the hub ?
Also post xrandr -q output .

Welcome to archlinux forums

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

clean chroot building not flexible enough ?
Try clean chroot manager by graysky

Re: Displaylink: external displays keep crashing

So I got the displays to work using this guide for PopOS on Reddit. However, it only works with X11 and it does not store any settings for the next reboot, even though I save them.

It is a HP USB-C/A Universal Dock G2 that I'm also using on a MacBook Pro and a Windows PC from work. The output of

Re: Displaylink: external displays keep crashing

So I got the displays to work using this guide for PopOS on Reddit.

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/evdi-git - though it seems 1.14.1-0 is the latest release you can get from the upstream webpage?
And what settings do you expect to be stored where and why?

Edit: you've seen https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/DisplayLink ?

Yes I have evdi 1.14.1-0 installed and displaylink 5.8-1, as per the DisplayLink page in the ArchWiki you quoted. I also tried the listed evdi-git and evdi-compat-git packages from AUR as well as displaylink-beta, but the only thing that got my external displays to show anything was the guide I mentioned.

I want to store basic stuff like the order of displays, individual resolutions and desktop backgrounds. All of this is reset to default when rebooting. It would also be great if I could try using the displays with Wayland.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Multih … _xorg.conf and you've not illustrated what any wayland related issue would be?

Thanks, I've read that article as well. The issue is in order to save any sort of config, the monitors would need to stay on consistently first.

I did a clean install of Arch today to prevent any sort of interference installed only KDE Plasma. Then, I got Evdi and DisplayLink from the AUR per the Wiki. I did try the workaround from Reddit, but it no longer worked. I proceeded with getting Evdi-git which turns the screens on but they crash as soon as I interact with them, so I'm back at my initial post.

I currently have installed:
evdi-git 1.14.1.r5.g0313eca-1
displaylink 5.8-1
Kernel: 6.6.9-arch1-1

sudo systemctl status displaylink.service

Re: Displaylink: external displays keep crashing

There's nothing to "safe", you write into the xorg configlets how you want the outputs to be laid out.

but it no longer worked

It might never have but been a race condition/fluke?

but they crash as soon as I interact with them, so I'm back at my initial post.

Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General
Please post your complete system journal for the boot:

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Sorry I don't understand what you mean by that.

Sorry I don't understand what you mean by that.

If the result of an experiment isn't reproducible, the successful experiment didn't prove anything.

Aparently it does not allow uploads via my DNS provider, I'll find a way around.

Do you have more luck w/ the LTS kernel?
Does displaylink ship a ddx driver (though the PKGBUILD seems to disable that?)

pacman -Ql displaylink evdi

I changed to the 6.1.70-1-lts kernel and now the displays do not turn on anymore and aren't listed on xrander either.

OK so apparently the Evdi module is missing now that I swapped kernels.

Jan 05 12:00:19 archlinux modprobe[2623]: modprobe: FATAL: Module evdi not found in directory /lib/modules/6.1.70-1-lts

I'm currently reading up online to figure out how to rebuilt it.

sudo systemctl start displaylink.service

fails because of this.

So I found this thread and installed evdi-compat-git as a result, but that also didn't solve it so I went back to evdi-git. Sill trying to restart displaylink at this point.

After reading this unrelated topic (but also regarding a module that wasn't found after a kernel update) I tried restarting again (did that before as well) but it still says module not found.

I also reinstalled both evdi-git and displaylink in the hopes it may rebuild the module, but no luck.

You forgot to install linux-lts-headers and/or build the dkms module or the build failed.

Thanks! I did

yay -S linux-lts-headers

and immediately the screens turned back on. However, they will disconnect/restart if interacted with. Should I try building the dkms module next?

Sorry I'm super new, so I can't read/interpret this very well so I thought it was better to share the output. Thanks for the patience!

Re: Displaylink: external displays keep crashing

dkms status

will tell whether you already built the relevant module (but I suspect that "screens turned back on" means "yes")
Does the LTS behavior cover X11, wayland or both?

so I thought it was better to share the output

No, that's fine - I was answering my own question, the package doesn't ship a DDX driver.

When I did the clean install yesterday I only installed KDE with X11 and I'd be totally happy if only that would work! smile

Re: Displaylink: external displays keep crashing

Is this different from the behavior w/ the main kernel or do you get the same Xorg segfaults?

You could try to build https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/displaylink w/ an adjusted PKGBUILD that doesn't have "--nox11" but I suspect the DDX driver will then crash in libevdi hmm

Same behavior as before. Building a package sounds advanced but I will try. smile I also tried the Reddit workaround again and while I could do everything it doesn't work anymore but gives me the same behavior.

You're building that package anyway (I hope yay allows you to inspect and edit the PKGBUILD)

Yeah sorry you were totally right, I just never used that option and actually edited anything. I did now, but unfortunately the result is the same.

Did it build and install a DDX driver and are you currently using it?
