Segmentation fault while trying to update

I don't know what else to even try...
Any attempt at using pacman -Syu ends up with segmentation fault error.
If I install one package at a time, things work normally.

I did a debug and didn't find anything useful, but maybe someone else will:

Looks like you missed https://archlinux.org/news/git-migration-completed/ .

Try running pacman -Syu again after you removed community repo as stated in the news item.

Re: Segmentation fault while trying to update

Okay I did that, and even merged pacman.conf.panew into pacman.conf, and no luck

Re: Segmentation fault while trying to update

debug: config: chomp

I doubt very much that should be present.

Please post the contents of your /etc/pacman.conf .

Also the output of

# LC_ALL=C pacman -Syu --debug

Re: Segmentation fault while trying to update

I found a workaround, but I hope that what ever was causing segfault is now fixed. What I did was first use

sudo pacman -Syu -p

and then just install each package by hand. Actually I installed bunch of them in bulk and it just worked.
I have no idea why trying to update gave me segfault.
If I now run Syu with everything updated, it works. So again hopefully whatever it was is gone. I'll see once there's a package to be updated.
Also I was lucky that I currently had only a small batch of packages to update. Doing a full KDE update (for example) by hand would be way harder.

That's just ILoveCandy option... and it shouldn't affect anything.

And this is the debug. There's loads of just checking each package I have installed, but I doubt that's important. And besides it's really long..

How did staging get enabled between your last post and now?

I'm also not seeing any evidence of a segfault in any of your outputs.

I've disabled it early on to troubleshoot, then before my last debug enabled it back to see if anything changed.

You should never, ever have staging enabled on an actual system.

Re: Segmentation fault while trying to update

I'm tempted to set this as solved, but TBH I still have no idea what was the problem. As I wrote above I've solved it by manually updating each package. Which isn't much of a fix.

OH damn. I guess I'm lucky things still work... I thought it was to do with wine-staging package, and enabled it some time ago. I didn't even noticed the announcement about it. (yes I know how dumb of me this was)
I'll disable it ASAP.

Neither does anyone else. You haven't posted any obvious error message - did you forget to redirect stderr?
Do you still have the original error that sparked your concerns?

The only part I didn't include anywhere is just the message that literally says Segmentation Fault, use --debug to report a bug or something to that extent.
I didn't redirect stderr, I just copied "raw" pacman -Syu --debug output. And when it was to long I did

 pacman -Syu --debug &> debug.txt

to save entire debug into a text file.
So all information I had, you have as well (I'm pretty sure).

I'm not currently at my computer, when I'll get there, I'll 1) disable Staging again, 2) try to update again. Then if things will work normally set this as solved.

Re: Segmentation fault while trying to update

It's not my install, so I'm not sure what exactly happened. I'll ask again in the morning, as well as check if there's a pacman coredump.

Can I re-install systemd / dbus-units and select dbus-broker to "correct" this?

Re: Segmentation fault while trying to update

Idk, right now it's not even clear what exactly (though likely pacman) or why/when it segfaults.

Re: Segmentation fault while trying to update

Hey,
my pacman system update was also failing with segmentation fault the last days and I've had the same last lines in the output of running pacman update with --debug as this:

zan wrote:

debug: checkdeps: package systemd-255.2-2
debug: checkdeps: missing dependency 'dbus' for package 'systemd'
debug: checkdeps: missing dependency 'dbus-units' for package 'systemd'

debug: provider found (dbus-broker-units provides dbus-units)
debug: provider found (dbus-daemon-units provides dbus-units)

Following

And I've seen that I have neither of the 2 packages installed. I have chosen to install the suggested default (broker) package and a complete system update went without any problems.

Thanks

Re: Segmentation fault while trying to update

EDIT:
It seems it helped to separately update dbus and then install dbus-broker-units.
Why it seems? Because now it doesn't segment fault anymore with the dbus-broker-units, but with:
debug: provider found (glfw-wayland provides glfw)
debug: provider found (glfw-x11 provides glfw)
but i guess this is off topic here.

Original message:
I unfortunately also get a segmentation fault with the :
debug: provider found (dbus-broker-units provides dbus-units)
debug: provider found (dbus-daemon-units provides dbus-units)
as last lines.

However,  I'm not asked to choose any of those when running pacman -Syu.
I also cannot install them separately, where I get the error:
dbus-broker-units: /usr/lib/systemd/system/dbus.service exists in filesystem (owned by dbus)

I don't have any segmentation faults with yay -Syu, but I didn't proceed with the upgrade, however it successfully  displays all the packages to be upgraded.

How to solve the issue with pacman?
Thanks

Ah - bad translation strings....

Try  "LC_ALL=C pacman -Syu"

That makes sense as it seems all of us with problems are from Slovenia, now that I have revisited the users with problems... I thought the names sounded familiar, but didn't put it together right away.

Re: Segmentation fault while trying to update

Regarding the pacman coredump, I ran

coredumpctl info pacman

and it listed all failed attempts as

Process XYZ (pacman) of user 0 terminated abnormally without generating a coredump.

The problem were indeed bad translation strings.

Allan wrote:
