[Solved] Laptop hanging up at login screen after latest -Syu

Hi,

I have GDM configured to launch i3-wm on a Thinkpad X1 Extreme-gen2 with hybrid graphics (Intel UHD 630, Nvidia TU117M). After running pacman -Syu yesterday and rebooting, the system came back up and appeared to freeze with a black screen after entering my password at login. But if I wait ~90 seconds it will eventually load i3.

I have tried rebooting into both Linux and Linux-LTS kernels. It appears that rolling back to the second most recent nvidia driver package with `pacman -U /var/cache/pacman...` is not supported, since mkinitcpio can't find the driver modules anymore.

I have nvidia proprietary drivers installed:

I kept coming across `(EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load module "glxserver_nvidia"` in the xorg log but coudn't find much to troubleshoot on, aside from this bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/70287. And for some reason it's not in this latest log file.

Boot log via `sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st`

I'd appreciate any troubleshooting advice!

Re: [Solved] Laptop hanging up at login screen after latest -Syu

Hey, I would recommend lightdm instead of GDM. None of the four kernels works with GDM on my latest computer (cannot get to the login screen), but lightdm works fine. Also have you tried the open-kernel NVidia drivers (not proprietary)? https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x8 … idia-open/

Only one thing is certain: nothing is certain.

Re: [Solved] Laptop hanging up at login screen after latest -Syu

Thank you for the recommendations cgb_spender. I'll look into lightdm.

I did try installing the nvidia-open package, but it resulted in no change of behavior.
I also tried removing modesetting, but it did not help.

Re: [Solved] Laptop hanging up at login screen after latest -Syu

You don't want to and "can't" remove modesetting. You mention it eventually does start anyway, so it's likely just stalling somewhere, the only obvious thing I see in the journal (the xorg log seems old and irrelevant btw) is

But this looks like a bunch of random stuff is starting as part of GDMs user session which has to die before it can properly start i3, so I'd agree potentially test a different display manager/in general get rid of some stuff like there's half a xfce4 environment starting, then half of gnome and then it eventually settles on i3.

I'm assuming your graphics driver is fine and the potential actual trigger of the issue the switchover to dbus-broker-units and how DBUS units are reacting to this in your case.

There's your delay.

What's odd is that NM starts out on a wifi connection and then switches to rj45 at 22:40:34
Also you're running ntp and there've been stalling issues reported for that in another thread, so try to disable the service.

Re: [Solved] Laptop hanging up at login screen after latest -Syu

Thank you both for the assistance, I really appreciate it.

I haven't done a very good job of keeping this system configuration tidy over the past decade. I went through and tried to remove xfce and gnome packages, and switched to lightdm as the login manager.

I also disabled syncthing, ntpd, and systemd-timesyncd. The hangup when logging in is unchanged.

Here is a cleaner journalctl log:
http://0x0.st/HU5Q.txt

That log shows wpa_supplicant activity around the time of the stall.
To seth's observation, there's no wired rj45 connection here, so I'm not sure why it would claim that.

Re: [Solved] Laptop hanging up at login screen after latest -Syu

Disabling ipv6 fixed the stall.

I first tried disabling NetworkManager entirely, and the stall went away. I expect some issue with NM-wait-online service is causing it? I used to have ipv6 disabled on the grub command line, not sure why it wasn't anymore. Added it back and re-ran the grub-mkconfig. There's still an issue here somewhere, but I'm marking solved since this workaround is functional for me.
