[SOLVED] Unable to run Wayland + GDM + KDE Plasma

Hello guys,

Just installed Arch on my spare HDD (2nd time), I have experimented with X11, but because of my dual monitor setup (1920x1080@75Hz with HDMI and 1280x1024x60Hz with DVI-D on a Gigabyte GTX 1080Ti OC), I cannot really use it with ease, so I will opt for Wayland. Wayland is something which I am using on Ubuntu, where I have GNOME + Wayland + GDM. So, I got used to it.

I could not find a guide of how to install Wayland KDE for use with GDM, do I need the SDDM for it? I would rather use GDM though. If there are any other options I should consider please tell me.

Could you please help me with the installation, this will fix my major problems with my move from Ubuntu to Arch and I will be pretty much there in terms of ease of use.

GDM - like all tools developed in the GNOME ecosystem - has very peculiar view of things so chances that GDM makes problems here are high.

Did you use nouveau or the proprietary nvidia on ubuntu? If you use nouveau you should be able to just try it.

With nvidia, two basic preconditions need to be fulfilled at the minimum:

The nvidia driver needs modesetting enabled: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting -- fbdev is known to make problems, you only need the nvidia-drm.modeset=1 parameter on the kernel commandline
You need to tell GDM to allow a Wayland session (not sure how necessary it is for a KDE session, but It'd be required for GNOME for sure): https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GDM#Wa … DIA_driver

If you did those, then clarify what you did exactly and post the output of

sudo journalctl -b

I am using proprietary nvidia on my Ubuntu install, same goes for my Arch install, but on Arch, I have paired GDM and KDE, rather than SDDM and KDE.

Edit: I also have the 545 drivers installed, as this is a new installation of Arch. So this "For nvidia driver version < 545, the nvidia_drm.modeset=1 option must be set through kernel parameters, in order to disable simpledrm" should not be applicable to me, because then it would have to be <= 545. Should I just force enable it?

I gave a link so you can post the entire thing, out of context or tails of logs when more is required isn't useful.

sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

will upload the journal to 0x0.st and return you a link you can post here.

You should enable the modeset parameter regardless, that sentence refers to the fact that you need to set said parameter explicitly as a kernel (commandline) parameter (instead of e.g. a modprobe.d config) in order to disable the simpledrm device which is only somewhat usable with fbdev=1 (... though it gets replaced regardless, technically this special specification isn't actually necessary) in any case I added a blurb that might help make this clearer.

Also about enabling the drm stuff (adding nvidia_drm.modeset=1 to be specific), I have found this. It does not appear to be that I have a /etc/default/grub directory/file, so am I running systemd-boot (because I used "bootctl-install" to install it)? How do I even check that? Where should I add the "nvidia_drm.modeset=1" to? In "/boot/loader/entries/arch.conf"?

Solved it.

I entered this command:

ln -s /dev/null /etc/udev/rules.d/61-gdm.rules

And the problems have been resolved.
