Having weird audio issues with my laptop

I have a ThinkPad T490 laptop, and ever since I connected it to a TV, i've been having issues with sound. My sound device dissapears from gnome settings, alsamixer, etc, unless I plug in a pair of headphones, then it magically re-appears. Even after unplugging my headphones, all the sound on my system works fine, until I reboot. What on earth could be causing this?

Re: Having weird audio issues with my laptop

I'd assume the problem is an HDMI audio device appearing then you connect the TV.  The sound is probably trying to route to the TV speakers; is the audio on the TV turned up? Does it have a sound bar? Is that turned on?

Try the program pavucontrol to explore your audio devices and to see which programs are using which audio device.  Start with the configuration control and look at the drop down for internal audio.

I should elaborate a bit, the laptop is no longer connected to the TV, the act of doing so is what actually caused this to happen. Opening pavucontrol, the dropdown only shows the HDMI output. There is no other sound device

Re: Having weird audio issues with my laptop

Please post outputs wrapped in bbcode code tags in the future and edit the post accordingly

You're just not picking the correct sink profile (check the "Configuration" tab in pavucontrol) or

pactl set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo
