[SOLVED]USB Devices (Keyboard, Mouse) not working anymore after update

Since the last update (including the dbus changes) my external USB devices like mouse and keyboard are not detected anymore. I can reproduce the issue both on my private and my working laptop. Devices connected through the docking station work though. The devices don't show up in lsusb or dmesg.

The output of journalctl looks promising to me:
gsd-usb-protect[1494]: Failed to fetch USBGuard parameters: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name is not activatable
However so far I didn't find any useful hints how to resolve this issue.

Run "dmesg -w" plug your keyboard in and post the tail dmesg created in response.

There is no new output with dmesg -w when plugging in the keyboard, seems like something fails on a low level.

I got my keyboard to work, when I plug it in with an external USB Hub before I boot the laptop. I couldn't yet fully establish whether there is a causal connection or only a coincidence. Here is the log when it works:

But there're no outright PCI, USB or *HCI errors in that log.
There were at least two incidents last year where users found a (new?) setting in their UEFI that disabled external USB devices

Thank you. I would have never thought about UEFI in that context. I accidentally broke my GRUB when recreating the config without reinstalling. So I reinstalled GRUB and that seems to have fixed the issue on my working laptop. I don't understand how though.
On my private laptop I tried the same (reinstalling GRUB) however the issue still persists. GRUB is on the same version (2:2.12-1). What I noticed is that the entry UEFI Firmware Settings is missing in the menu on my old private laptop even though I recreated the config with the new GRUB version.

For clarity:
Work laptop: Dell XPS 15 (2021?!)  - working after GRUB reinstall
Private laptop: Asus Zenbook (2012 (yes it's old)) - not working so far after GRUB reinstall

The UEFI has nothing to do with the bootloader itr and I'm not sure how re-installing grub could restore USB access on the OS.

Do you have any possibly relevant USB settings in your UEFI?
You should be able to access the firmware by pressing F2 while it's powering on?

I'm not sure either what's going on - maybe some some side effect. In UEFI I found only two entries: Legacy USB Support (enabled) and XHCI Pre-Boot Mode (Smart Auto (I tried Enabled too)).

However I noticed that my grub.cfg contains some suspicious entries which are not present on the working laptop. Not sure what its doing, the config is auto generated.

Searching for the boot partition, there's nothing suspicious about that.
What happens if you disable the legacy usb support (which is typically code for the xhci handoff)?

Can you boot a live distro (eg. grml) from a usb key and do the usb peripherals work there?

I just booted Ubuntu from USB and the keyboard worked out of the box. So it must be somehow related to my Arch installation...

Does plugging the device also produce absolutely no event in dmesg on that machine?
Do "uname -a" and "pacman -Qs kernel" align?

dmesg provides "normal" output on the Ubuntu system. Here is the full dmesg log with two times plugging in a keyboard.

I also noticed, that when I boot on Arch with the keyboard plugged in during/before boot, I do see the keyboard in lsusb. However it still doesn't work and I still get no dmesg when unplugging/replugging it. Seems like something kills the USB (port (power save?), driver, something) during the boot process. Good point. Unfortunately there seems to be no such option in my bios. I tried blacklisting the btusb kernel module but that doesn't seem to work.

Tried how? Does btusb still show up in the kernel?

module_blacklist=btusb

in the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters *will* prevent loading it for sure.

nb. that btusb might however also be only the first victim of what's actually going on here (despite 22 being "invalid argument")

Sorry for the delay. I tried putting a file into modprobe.d/ . With the module_blacklist=btusb in my grub line it does block the btusb module from being loaded but it seems like that doesn't resolve the issue.

The device is there and dennected during the boot and then the bluetooth "disconnects" and the webcam shows up

I removed bbswitch and bumblebee but it didn't make a difference. I tried both LTS and standard kernel and didn't see a difference in behaviour.
Since the logs suggested some relationship with bluetooth I tried disabling the bluetooth kernel module. That removes some of the log entries but doesn't fix the issue (http://0x0.st/HDkL.log).

edit: Seems like I fixed it. I check my power save settings and changed a few options in powertop. Now its working.
