[SOLVED] Black Screen when booting with HDMI plugged in

Hello everyone,

Since the installation, I have witnessed some unfortunate non-functional occurrences. For instance, when I boot up my Lenovo laptop with an HDMI cable plugged in, the screen goes black. However, when I move around my mousepad, I can see the mouse pointer move. The only way I can resolve this issue is by rebooting while my laptop is not connected to the HDMI cable and external monitor.

I also want to mention that both screens go black. In some rare cases, after I log in to my SDDM field and then plug in my HDMI cable, both monitors will work, but in most cases, they do not.

Additionally, I want to note that I have a proprietary NVIDIA driver installed, along with the x86_64 Intel graphic driver, indicating that my laptop has two GPUs (hybrid graphics). I use the NVIDIA Prime render offload to access both GPUs if needed to preserve my battery. (If that has anything to do with the external monitor)

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen when booting with HDMI plugged in

screen goes black … I can see the mouse pointer move

Ie. the screen doesn't turn black but SDDM(?) doesn't render anything (properly)

Get rid of xf86-video-intel and if that alone doesn't fix it already, please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen when booting with HDMI plugged in

Hello Seth,

I appreciate your help! Firstly, I uninstalled the package you listed, and I was able to see both screens while booting my laptop. However, other weird things happened. First, Dolphin had a strange format, with fonts in some folders appearing large while others were small. In the Terminal, when I typed something, the text was written inside my name, meaning it was also strangely formatted. I tried to screenshot it with Spectacle, but when selecting the window, it kept choosing the wrong one. I was forced to install xf86-video-intel to prevent this weird bug from happening again. However, I believe xf86-video-intel is the trigger for me not being able to get it to work properly.

Here is the following Xorg log:

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen when booting with HDMI plugged in

The log with xf86-vide-intel doesn't reallly help much, you get swrast because of the missing i965 driver and you want nothing of that.
Please post the log w/ the modesetting driver, you can upload it from the console (ctrl+alt+f2)

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

Wrt the modesetting driver/glamor, there's only one HiDPI output and I assume that's around the ballpark of your symptoms.
The different driver will change the output names, so https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/KDE#Un … lution_set and just remove everything in that directory.

If that doesn't help and for a screenshot, just capture the entire screen - you can edit/redact the image w/ gimp or krita afterwards.

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen when booting with HDMI plugged in

Okay, I am sorry. I have removed xf86-video-intel and rebooted. Interestingly, I no longer have the issue. Nonetheless, here is the Xorg Log without the package installed: http://0x0.st/HkjU.txt

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen when booting with HDMI plugged in

You'll have to call back if and when it re-emerges, there's nothing suspicious in that log.
You might still want to enable https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA … de_setting (use the nvidia_drm.modeset=1 kernel parameter, modprobe.conf won't suffice; don't use fbdev=1 anywere for now as it causes framebuffer switching problems, maybe fixed w/ upcoming 550xx)

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen when booting with HDMI plugged in

Okay, thank you!

But now I am wondering because I have removed the package xf86-video-intel, will my laptop be able to switch between the GPUs? I used the Prime Render Offload method, which is required for this package.

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen when booting with HDMI plugged in

Yes, and you'll now even use HW acceleration on the intel chip cool

glxinfo -B
prime-run glxinfo -B

xf86-video-intel is being phased out and not a good choice for newer HW, the modesetting driver shifts the workload towards mesa and the kernel module.

Re: [SOLVED] Black Screen when booting with HDMI plugged in

Interesting!

Thank you so much for all the help. Now I am able to have two monitors smile with the Prime Render Offload method.

You can mark this thread as solved.

No, I can't tongue

Please mark resolved threads by editing your initial posts subject - so others will know that there's no task left, but maybe a solution to find.
Thanks.
