[SOLVED] my issue is fixed but i dont know why

hello,

i am an extreme noob, apologies in advance.

INFO:
im running a 980 (not ti) off a retired dell optiplex. here's the output of my grep nvidia

nvidia_drm            118784  18
nvidia_uvm           3506176  0
nvidia_modeset       1585152  17 nvidia_drm
nvidia              62390272  310 nvidia_uvm,nvidia_modeset
video                  77824  3 dell_wmi,i915,nvidia_modeset

currently i am on kernel 6.7.3-arch1-2, bash 5.2.26, gnome 45.3, intel hd graphics 630

ive got my primary monitor plugged into my 980 (quadrupled checked) and my secondary running off my mobo as i don't have another hdmi port. i understand this isn't optimal but i am broke.

ISSUE:
it felt like i was running integrated graphics on my primary monitor, refresh rate (or fps? idk) felt extremely slow without anything running and i could tell that it was faster on my secondary monitor. i was also getting worse fps in games. i installed lm_sensors to check temps and while i can't see the temps of the card itself, everything else appeared well withing acceptable range. i did pacman -Syu and rebooted with my secondary monitor unplugged which fixed the issue, i just have no idea why. the update / reboot also seemed to have reset my monitor preferences so something happened. id like to know so that if / when i encounter this issue in the future i will be well equipped.

thanks,
began

UPDATE:
i was able to reproduce the issue. was fucking around with Minecraft shaders and experienced the same fps drop, like my drivers were no longer working. i ended up having to do a hard reset, like last time, and like last time when i rebooted i was still experiencing the same issue. however this time pacman -Syu and reboot with my secondary monitor unplugged did not fix the issue. i uninstalled nvidia-dkms drivers and installed the nvidia drivers (no dkms) which seems to have completely fixed the issue

Re: [SOLVED] my issue is fixed but i dont know why

Guessing random bits of a situation you can't reproduce anymore is a fools errand. You could look at journal logs from the faulty situation and try to make heads or tails of it.

The better approach will be to be glad this got fixed and takle it again when the need arises and then post information then.  Random guess 6.7.3 broke the nvidia graphics driver for a while (though afaik it was held back due to this issue from getting pushed to stable) so you might have ran without the nvidia driver for a while, this would show up in the pacman.log for example.
