[SOLVED]XRandR detects second monitor, but no signal is displayed

Issue: XRandR recognizes my second monitor (DP-2), but no signal is being displayed on the monitor screen itself.  A screenshot confirmed that there is another active display that dwm can toggle to and interact with, just no actual picture.

'xrandr --auto' and 'xrandr --addmode' did not force it to work.

I found this thread here with a similar issue , but it applied to NVIDIA drivers.

I've been stuck on this for a couple days now.  ARandR has also been picky about which monitor goes to which port, and on which side of the primary monitor, maybe it's just the display port itself?  I am out of ideas and probably missing something blatantly obvious.  Help is much appreciated, hopefully this isn't a hardware issue.

Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED]XRandR detects second monitor, but no signal is displayed

no log for Xorg(?):

Most certainly not in your $HOME.
Please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

but no signal is being displayed on the monitor screen itself

Does the output say "no signal" or is that an interpretation of "the screen is all black"?

maybe it's just the display port itself

Does the monitor have other connectors?
Does it work if you use only it and the LVDS but remove the VGA one?

Re: [SOLVED]XRandR detects second monitor, but no signal is displayed

Hi sorry for not responding sooner, I got busy with stuff.  Hopefully you still see this reply, seth.

Here is the log file results for (EE) and (WW):

[conchobhar@archlinux ~dt/xorg]$ grep -e '(WW)' -e tty Xorg.0.log

[ 13.664] (WW) VGA arbiter: cannot open kernel arbiter, no multi-card support

The ouput says 'no signal' before going black when i try turning the monitor on and off again. The monitors have no other connectors, just a VGA each (I have a VGA to Display Port cable for one of the monitors). The only other monitor port on the laptop base is a spot for a DVI connection.

Physically removing VGA does allow for DP-2 to work. Trying to reconnect and arrange the monitors as I had them in ARandR gives the error:

XRandR failed: XRandR returned error code 1: b'xrandr: Configure crtc 1 failed\n'

Turning the power off and on again causes VGA to get connected again, just in the wrong order.

Re: [SOLVED]XRandR detects second monitor, but no signal is displayed

Your xorg log, not some random grep thereof.

Physically removing VGA does allow for DP-2 to work.

sounds like they're the same crtc…
Has this configuration ever worked in the past?

This configuration has never worked before, this is the first time I'm setting it up. So far this is the closest I've been to having them all work at the same time, no other configuration has worked. Previously, I had the cables swapped, so the monitor currently in VGA was in DP-2 initially, and vis versa.  That set up never allowed me to have all three active, no matter the placement or resolution of the monitors.

If they're on the same crtc, would using the DVI port instead of the VGA or DP help?

Re: [SOLVED]XRandR detects second monitor, but no signal is displayed

Possibly, there're three crtcs, there's no dvi but it might be the one of the HDMI outputs.
However

Are there any adapters involved?

Re: [SOLVED]XRandR detects second monitor, but no signal is displayed

No adapters involved anymore.  I did have a VGA-DP adapter, but since it wasn't working I bought a single cable with a VGA end and a DP end.

Re: [SOLVED]XRandR detects second monitor, but no signal is displayed

I'm afraid that still is and adapter.
Can you elaborate a bit on the config?
What output uses the adapter, do you use the VGA output on the computer and the DP input on the monitor or the other way round?

Re: [SOLVED]XRandR detects second monitor, but no signal is displayed

It was the other way around.  VGA output from the monitor and DP input to the computer. I'm guessing we found the culprit here then.

The computer has the output, the monitor the input (and actually you described that in #3 - I just skipped it…)
But test the DVI output, yes - the systems manual should also explain what is wired where, b/c w/ the eDP, VGA, DP and DVI you've 4 connectors for 3 crtcs. One of them is double-use.

That did the trick! DVI port (HDMI-3 in the list) was able to display the signal.

Thank you!
