Suspend2, ATI fglrx packages and missing sources

It is completely possible that something important is passing me by,  give me a nice pointer if that's the case. But for now i don't quite get the idea behind a suspend2 kernel with ATI fglrx > 8.29.6 packages. ATI acknowledges that all fglrx drivers after 8.29.6 are breaking resume and lo and behold, they do so with the new 2.6.19 kernel, too. Funny, isn't it?

On a related issue, i am unable to locate the source packages for the kernel or at least up-to-date kernel-headers in the repositories. Needless to say, this makes it rather hard to build the older ATI drivers. So i have to compile the whole kernel chain by hand, which is somewhat defeating the purpose and quite rough for a simple and leightweight distribution, especially considering the extra work required for mkinitcpio.

Hooray for me!

Filed a bug? There's a new ati release today anyway, might fix it.

you don't need the 'kernel-headers' package to build modules. Kernel headers is for userspace apps and doesnt have to match the latest version of the kernel. Nor do you need a kernel source package.

When you want to roll back a driver, use abs: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ABS

and just modify the PKGBUILD there, and build it. The kernel itself includes sufficient files to build third party modules. You can get older versions from CVS too, http://cvs.archlinux.org

Did i file a bugreport? Yes, with ATI. ATI actually recommended until today the 8.29 version for Laptops. But i guess you mean within Arch's bugtracker, so no.
The new 8.32 version hosed my laptop in three major ways, despite being the new recommendation for laptops by ATI. roll I'm quite aware that this is ATI's pile of shit, not yours. I just found the idea to use that driver for a suspend kernel funny.

I have no deeper understanding of this matter, so i tend to follow the instructions given by the module distributor and here ATI (or NVidia for that matter) certainly disagrees with you. Besides, i need to patch my kernel for some ACPI pecularities of my laptop, so i need the source anyway. That's not your worry, though.

Ow, my eyes. Unfortunatly i have to say that the traditional way of doing things under GNU/Linux looks more comfortable to me. I understand that you long-time users may find this to be a rather natural way of doing things, but for me? No, sorry. I'm rather fresh to ArchLinux and while i enjoy using it on my laptop, i have no intention of becoming a greasemonkey. If there is a way to do a quick and dirty package build like dh_make for Debian, show me the way.

Anyway, have fun.

Hooray for me!

Have you considered using the open source "radeon" drivers?

Ahhh, salt in my wounds!  wink
Yes, i did, they were my first choice and the reason i bought these laptops! Unfortunatly my big, floppy donkything ATI Xpress 200M chipset based HP Compaq nx6125 laptop is not playing nice with the free radeon driver, especially when docked. Somehow the free radeon driver doesn't manage to "penetrate" the docks to find the attached 19" TFTs and thus only displays 1024x768, while the ATI crudware does and displays higher resolutions. Forcing the radeon to display, say, 1280x1024 breaks the laptop panel display, so no painless docking for me. As far as i can judge it, this is because the radeon driver actually plays by the book while the fglrx driver gives a shit about proper procedures. Go figure roll

Man, i loathe this proprietary shitware. Hooray for me!
