Odd unionfs + nfs kernel panic

I create rucksack as a tool for using a shared pkg cache in Arch.  I recently set it up on my new machine and have noticed an odd bug.

If I mount the remote cache, union the fs and ls in the remote cache dir it lists fine.  If i then ls in the union dir it lists fine.  However, if I just ls in the union dir straight away, without ls in remote cache dir first I get a kernel panic.  Weird, eh?
