[SOLVED] scaling broken on Xfce

Since my last reboot a few minutes ago, my scaling is broken: I'm using a 4K resolution on an external monitor attached to my laptop, laptop screen disabled. It used to work with 1x scaling, but now I need to set 2x scaling and still the applications look bad and different than before (for example, some UI elements are too small), even the Xfce UI.

Here is my pacman.log from today:

Re: [SOLVED] scaling broken on Xfce

xrandr -q
xdpyinfo | grep resol
xrdb -q | grep -i dpi
printenv

And please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Nothing in that log looks like prone to cause any changes in this area, so we'll just check what's broken.

Re: [SOLVED] scaling broken on Xfce

BTW: It seems that either only Gtk or Qt UI's are affected. For example, Firefox looks fine, but Xfce not.

Re: [SOLVED] scaling broken on Xfce

You're scaling the output??
Is that an effort to make everything smaller because it is "too large"™?

The displayport output and eDP are ~160 dpi, running it at 192dpi will make  everythin a bit™ too large.
Fyi, sane ui font sizes are 8-12pt but if you'te doubling everything you've probably (mis)configured the system for 96 dpi?

Re: [SOLVED] scaling broken on Xfce

My scaling configuration used to work before yesterday.

What do you suggest I should do?

Re: [SOLVED] scaling broken on Xfce

My scaling configuration used to work before yesterday.

By sheer luck. Nothing in that update would have caused changes, maybe an earlier update that went unnoticed because you didn't reboot?

Either way: Elaborate on the situation - you've said it's "broken" and you "need to set 2x scaling" and "still the applications look bad and different" which is all meaninless.
My advice would be to fix the system for 160dpi and most certainly not to run the external output at downscaled 8k.
So undo that, set the DPI to 160 and  explain what you don't like about the situation (text too large?) and what eg. your default fonts are configured at.

A less elegant situation would (likely) be to (undo the 2x scale) and run the system at 96dpi.

But based on the current information, or lack thereof, that's all speculative.

Re: [SOLVED] scaling broken on Xfce

There might be some related problem with the GPU driver (I'm on a T14s Gen 3 AMD laptop):

$ cat .xsession-errors

Re: [SOLVED] scaling broken on Xfce

From your Xorg log

[     5.745] (==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Mon Feb 12 17:21:58 2024
[ 5.751] (II) xfree86: Adding drm device (/dev/dri/card1)
[ 5.751] (II) Platform probe for /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:08.1/0000:33:00.0/drm/card1
[ 5.795] (II) Applying OutputClass "AMDgpu" to /dev/dri/card1
[ 5.807] (II) Applying OutputClass "AMDgpu" options to /dev/dri/card1
[ 5.914] (II) AMDGPU(0): glamor X acceleration enabled on AMD Radeon Graphics (radeonsi, rembrandt, LLVM 16.0.6, DRM 3.57, 6.7.4-zen1-1-zen)
[ 5.937] (II) AMDGPU(0): [DRI2] DRI driver: radeonsi
[ 5.937] (II) AMDGPU(0): [DRI2] VDPAU driver: radeonsi
[ 6.005] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized radeonsi

Are the session errors dated?

In doubt add "initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … mmand_line but as much as I dread that thing, I don't think it's the cause here.
Focus on the DPI situation, if your default font is something like 24pt, you're doing it wrongly.

Re: [SOLVED] scaling broken on Xfce

I fixed it by changing the scaling in ~/.bash_profile. Sorry for the late reply.
