My audio works fine until I open pavucontrol, then everything goes silent. I'm using a Sennheiser GSX 1000 DAC/AMP, which is natively supported in PulseAudio. I tried this using my default audio device straight out of the motherboard and it works fine, so there's something interfering with the amp. In the Pulse Audio Troubleshooting Page, I have already tried step 2.2 and 2.3. As usual, I don't really know what logs are needed, so feel free to ask them. Thanks!

Mhm... You're not actively playing back in the not broken case which skews some data. But generally speaking there's no issue on pulse's side. But since opening pavucontrol will imply that all active devices/sinks get woken up by a monitoring stream to display volume levels, what I'm actually thinking here is that you have some DAC/firmware internal setting that mutes the 8-volume surround sound as soon as something happens on the "chat" sink, check whether you have some knob for this on the device itself.
Alternatively/additionally try getting that out of the equation, you should have a sennheiser profile only exposing the 8 channel sink, just spitballing because I didn't ask for the profiles, but should be something like
pactl set-card-profile alsa_output.usb-Sennheiser_GSX_1000_Main_Audio_5698800406000510-00 analog-output-surround71or alternatively check the configuration tab in pavucontrol and switch to a profile that doesn't show/expose the "chat" sink

trying that yields
pactl set-card-profile alsa_output.usb-Sennheiser_GSX_1000_Main_Audio_5698800406000510-00 analog-output-surround71
Failure: No such entityI should add that I just noticed the chat output works (I use it for discord), so I'm guessing only the main one breaks. In my configuration tab I don't have any profiles to select, unfortunately.

I did some further testing. I was listening to music through the main output, and as soon as I joined discord, which plays a sound on the chat output, the main one got cut off. Then, I changed the discord output to the main one, reconnected to the channel to make it play a sound, and the main channel could be heard again. Redoing this with the chat output silenced it again.

yes that command was random guessed, as mentioned check the configuration tab, or post/look at
pactl list cardsultimately this sounds like this is a setting on the DAC, you likely have some knob somewhere on the thing itself that mutes your main output when audio comes from chat and you can likely configure the ratio of chat/main out volume somewhere.
