Gnome is X11?

I moved from amd to nvidia sveral months back and have been having weird crashing issues with gnome when using OBS and thought it may be due to wayland.

i thought id try out xorg but didn't see the option for it in the GDM settings box on the login screen it only shows Gnome and Gnome classic there is no Gnome on xorg option

if i run echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE it prints x11

So I think it may be x11 already? If it is how do I get a GDM option to use wayland or if it is wayland and that x11 message is wrong how do i get the option for Gnome on xorg

It's stupid that the default nvidia gnome session isn't called Gnome on Xorg when its using xorg. very confusing
