What kind of "terminal"? foot resp. the weston terminal? (ie. a native wayland client)
The default weston terminal that comes with it, when clicking in the terminal icon a window named "Wayland Terminal" pops up.
for a sanity check post the output of "printenv".

Don't test this in a browser, not even under wayland - if the videoplayer renders a torn frame, no compositor in the world (incl. wayland) will ever fix that.
Esp. if this is librewolf since it'll most likely run on xwayland and even w/ "GDK_BACKEND=wayland MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1" I'm not betting on proper videoplayback.
How does https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p2150173 behave under weston?

How does https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p2150173 behave under weston?
I opened weston, then its terminal, used the command to open the youtube video on mpv, and it's still torn.
Using the "--video-sync=display-resample" option makes the video less smooth, as if the moving white bar partly moves teleporting (still some notion of movement, but it's laggy); removing the option makes it behave just like in the browser (it's librewolf), smoothly, but with torned frames.
Offline
--video-sync=display-resample resamples the video to your framerate, I kinda worry there's gonna be a problem with the panel that claims continous-frequency but runs at only 60Hz what leads to all those vblank related issues.
Chances that a tearfree option in the modesetting or intel driver can fix this are meager if neither picom nor weston produces the desired behavior.
Online
I see, any suggestion on what I can do next? Like a direction on what I should go after to fix it.

Can you configure anything about the graphcis stack (dGPU, panel settings) in the UEFI?
I'd first and foremost disable variablerefresh again, because the EDID is likely wrong about that.
Next to the pst, you could try to disable fbc, "i915.enable_fbc=0 i915.enable_psr=0"
Sanity check, you're *not* somwhere disabling the vblank_mode?
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Intel_ … on_(VSYNC)
You could also try to feed a generic EDID, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel … s_and_EDID (this might break the output altogether, so make sure you know how to use the boodloader commandline or have some live distro to undo the changes from there)
Online
Can you configure anything about the graphcis stack (dGPU, panel settings) in the UEFI?
No, that's actually the worst UEFI/BIOS I have seem, it's just a few options as basic as "enable fast boot" and "disable notebook touchpad".
disable variablerefresh again
Right, I deleted "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-vrr.conf".
you could try to disable fbc, "i915.enable_fbc=0 i915.enable_psr=0"
I added it in "/boot/loader/entries/2023-10-24_20-28-51_linux-zen.conf" (I'm telling you this just to make sure I'm not doing things wrong)
you're *not* somwhere disabling the vblank_mode?
No, I have never disabled it by myself and have no ".drirc" in my home folder.
You could also try to feed a generic EDID
I'll test it and give the feedback.
(
edit: actually, I'm not very sure on what I should do to get a "generic EDID", I have read the links the arch wiki redirect to, but I'm having trouble, my attention spam now is something like 0.5s, and that's no exageration.
There's this excerpt:
The real solution is, thus, to optionally disable probing of the monitor and to directly feed appropriate monitor data into the kernel. For this purpose, the kernel configuration item CONFIG_DRM_LOAD_EDID_FIRMWARE was introduced. If enabled, the drm_kms_helper module will accept the parameter edid_firmware=, search for the given file in the /lib/firmware directory and use its data, if valid, to initialize the monitor timings of the graphics adapter as if it had been received from the monitor. Four standard timings are hard-coded in the driver and available immediately:
Resolution \\ Name
1024x768/60 Hz \\ edid/1024x768.bin
1280x1024/60 Hz \\ edid/1280x1024.bin
1680x1050/60 Hz \\ edid/1680x1050.bin
1920x1080/60 Hz \\ edid/1920x1080.bin
To force, for example, a screen resolution of 1280x1024/60 Hz, simply remove nomodeset from, add drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware=edid/1280x1024.bin to the kernel command, and enjoy a much faster screen and all the eye candy you missed so long.
I couldn't figure out for now how to enable the kernel configuration "CONFIG_DRM_LOAD_EDID_FIRMWARE" the text referred to.
I checked inside "/lib/firmware" and couldn't find any "edid/x.x.bin" file nor "edid" directory itself, I guess I'm supposed to provide these?
There's a "Build your own EDID data" section, which gives me the link https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke … 13756b1075, is it what you're referring to?

I'm telling you this just to make sure I'm not doing things wrong
Tell yourself:
cat /proc/cmdline
I couldn't figure out for now how to enable the kernel configuration
zgrep CONFIG_DRM_LOAD_EDID_FIRMWARE /proc/config.gz
If it wasn't enabled, you'd have to rebuild the kernel w/ that flag.
I guess I'm supposed to provide these?
The common resolutions are built-in, "drm.edid_firmware=edid/1920x1080.bin" should™ do.

"drm.edid_firmware=edid/1920x1080.bin" should™ do
Thanks, I just managed that, but the screen still torns, the only two diffences I saw were: my screens contrast seemed lower (graysh) and my terminal emulator fonts size got way smaller.
Strange, you think there's a considerable possibility It might not be possible to fix this in my laptop?

Do you have an external output you could try?
Make sure to set it as "primary" output.

I tried on the tv and set it as primary with xrandr; I used the command to open in mpv both with VRR on and off, but still the same.
I feel like I'm just annoying you, I'm sorry.
(edit: as stated before, using "glxgears" vsync appears to be working (although I'm not sure if VRR is classified as such, but I think there's no convention), but I still get those invisible lines when scrolling through and that torn screen in that test video, I wonder if the problem is maybe not related to vertical synchronization).

If it was only the video I'd blame VAAPI, but since you're also getting that from window movements in wayland and otoh the resampled video does not tear (but judder? what's absolutely not supposed to happen) that seems unlikely as well.
There was https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xse … issues/928
Do you get other results w/ "mpv -hwdec=no …"?
Does it help to "export LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=1"?
Or, in case this is performance related, adding "intel_idle.max_cstate=1 i915.enable_dc=0" to the kernel parameters?
Finally: install xf8-video-intel, enable the TearFree option and set dri to iris
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
Option "DRI" "iris"
Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection
Make double sure that you're not ending up w/ the swrast driver and check the tearing situation.
Edit, just fwwi

install xf8-video-intel, enable the TearFree option and set dri to iris
That actually fixed it, thanks for all the help you provided, a lot.
As a note: when using mpv, I got the warning:
Audio/Video desynchronisation detected! Possible reasons include too slow
hardware, temporary CPU spikes, broken drivers, and broken files. Audio
position will not match to the video (see A-V status field).
Consider trying `--profile=fast` and/or `--hwdec=auto-safe` as they may help.
I used the "--profile=fast" flag and the video got smooth, as it should be, I installed vlc to check, and it was smooth by default, I hope it's not related to a problem I might need to fix later.
I believe I should change to the modesetting driver once the next xorg-server version launches?
Once again, thanks for the assistance you gave me.

As a note: when using mpv
w/ what actual parameters? -hwdec=no?
Don't use that on a regular base.
In doubt post the xorg log and "glxinfo -B" to make sure you're not running some software emulation.
It's not entirely clear whether the the next xorg relase will fix this, though you might have run into https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xse … issues/928 and that might be actually fixed.
Or not.
Online
w/ what actual parameters? -hwdec=no?
I tested with multiple combinations of parameters, when adding "-hwdec=no" only, the video would get very halting, but even before that (and even before installing xf86-video-intel and setting dri to iris and enabling the TearFree option) the video would still get halting, as if it is a performance issue (and maybe that's it indeed). I have in my statusbar a entry showing the current CPU's usage (by %), and I would get 10-20% of CPU usage when playing the white bar test video, I don't know if that's supposed to be like that.
Also, I tested the options again, now the "--profile=fast" flag is not fixing it anymore, it's halting (on the browser it is still smooth at least).
In doubt post the xorg log

edit: I rebooted and now mpv runs flawlessly with the "--profile=fast" flag, so there's something(s) that happen that makes things go wrong through time.

What does "very halting" mean?
What's the output of mpv?
Is it better if you download the video w/ yt-tlp and play the local file (ie. a network problem)?
The server config is ok, you're running on the intel driver.

Lagging, I believe it's a better word to describe when I used the --profile=fast option; without this flag the video seemed to just have lower performance, I believe lower frame-rate.
Also, important to note the edit I made in my last reply:

I had already tried that, but it's the same thing.

I worry about my computer, I thought about installing a new arch in an USB just to check if the same problems appear there too (including the seemly random slow keyboard input I'm getting sometimes), but I'm trying to avoid that kind of pain again.

That's a 4k VP9@60Hz - it's probably gonna have your IGP struggle a bit.
mpv -vo=gpu --video-sync=display-resample -ytdl-raw-options='format="299"' 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmHaa5pvpVc'
(298 is 720p@60, 136 is 720p@30)

I see, it's working well now, although it's strange that in the previous boot it worked fine than it didn't later on.
I believe I should mark my post as SOLVED.
edit: Thanks for all your help, you're a wonderful guy.
