[SOLVED] Keyboard input strangely slow.

Hi, for some reason, the response I get from pressing the keyboards keys gets suddenly slow in seemly random times, I have to reboot the computer for it to turn back as it is supposed to behave.

Another problem as well is: my key remaps vanish; I use setxkbmap and xdotool to disable CapsLock and remaps other few keys, then suddenly the CapsLock works again and I lose the remaps I assigned.

Here's my Xorgs log file content:

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard input strangely slow.

[    21.936] (**) |   |-->Device "flickerscreen"

The server in the log only ran for 2 seconds, does it actually cover such incident?
Was this also the case before you enabled VRR?

my key remaps vanish; I use setxkbmap and xdotool to disable CapsLock and remaps other few keys, then suddenly the CapsLock works again and I lose the remaps I assigned

This here however sounds like the keyboard reconnects, you're at least not remapping/disabling caps lock w/ an xkb server configlet.

And for the layout, I suspect you get the regular "br" because you accidentally configured abnt2 as model, not as layout

[ 22.916] (**) Option "xkb_options" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"

(the localectl interface is super-fragile, rather edit the file manually)

Logitech M720 Triathlon shows up as keyboard, but seems a mouse?
The only keyboard there is some AT Translated Set 2 - is that a notebook internal keyboard?
Do you experience the same issues w/ an usb *wired* one? ($5 office supply model is gonna do, the less fancy, the better)?

I have to reboot the computer

For clearification, restarting the X11 server/graphical.target is not sufficient? You *have* to reboot?
Do you have a system journal for a boot that covers such incident?

Strange, there's a device explicitely called "flickerscreen"? I'm not sure whether it's some form of warning or something else.

The server in the log only ran for 2 seconds, does it actually cover such incident?

I copied and posted the log here while facing the problem, It's supposed to be covering the incident; not sure if I somehow made a mistake while doing such a simple task.

Was this also the case before you enabled VRR?

No, it was also happening before enabling it.

This here however sounds like the keyboard reconnects, you're at least not remapping/disabling caps lock w/ an xkb server configlet.

I see, I'll check how to do it.

And for the layout, I suspect you get the regular "br" because you accidentally configured abnt2 as model, not as layout

Alright, the model should be assigned as "br" while the layout is "abnt2"? (edit: Actually, I believe it's already all right, I searched after the models and layouts, and that seems how it should be)

Logitech M720 Triathlon shows up as keyboard, but seems a mouse?

Logitech M720 is a wireless mouse I'm using, I have to use the adapter that came with it for it to work on Linux, I tried it back when installing linux, I'll check again to see if I can get it working without the adapter. (edit: I managed to make it work without the adapter, but it's still being detected as a keyboard, actually, it's being detected as a mouse then as a keyboard, maybe due to its lateral buttons?).

The only keyboard there is some AT Translated Set 2 - is that a notebook internal keyboard?

It might be, I use the notebooks keyboard.

Do you experience the same issues w/ an usb *wired* one? ($5 office supply model is gonna do, the less fancy, the better)?

I can't tell it for now, since I had to turn off my PC after I posted the question, but I connected a wired one and it got detected as an actual mouse in the xorg log, I suspect the wireless mouse adapter is the reason why its mouse is being detected as a keyboard, I'll try to get it working without the adapter and see if it also gets detected as a mouse, maybe it'll solve things.

For clearification, restarting the X11 server/graphical.target is not sufficient? You *have* to reboot?

I believe restarting the X11 server would be sufficient; I only tried to reboot to get away with the issues, in case it happens again I'll test just restarting the xorg server.

Do you have a system journal for a boot that covers such incident?

I don't. I'll do the things I commented about trying and will see if it happens again.

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard input strangely slow.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 8#p2149778

I copied and posted the log here

cat /home/user/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

But it's possible that there wasn't anything else logged and the keyboard beahvior isn't related to any server events.
A loss of the device (causing an xkb reset to server config defaults)  would however show up.

Alright, the model should be assigned as "br" while the layout is "abnt2"?

Sorry, "br" is the layout, "abnt2" the variant - I got confused by the confusion tongue

I see hahahaha

I'll make sure to set the remaps appropriately and wait to see if the problems come out again, if they do, I'll come back here to give the logs. Thanks for your help.

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard input strangely slow.

For capslock see "grep caps /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.lst" - whether your other remaps can be done w/o writing your own xkb layout needs to be seen.
But xmodmap changes will be lost when the device re-attaches (deliberately or by accident/bug)

It happened again, here's the xorg log (observation: I reconnected the mouse myself to test, which might be showing in the bottom in the log), I'll restart the server later (in case there's more information I can give).

This is still bogus, abnt2 is your *variant*

And the keyboard re-attached ~3:20 minutes before the end of the log.
Did you suspend/resume the system?

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard input strangely slow.

I changed it now, but I'm still in doubt about it, I spent some time trying to make sure about the "model" and "variant" options, and all the information I saw was confusing, all the "list of models and variants" I got didn't mention "abnt2" or something similar, in the list of variants I found some "br" ones, but abnt2 wasn't there, but I set it regardless; both the model and the variant are set as abnt2, and the layout as "br".

Did you suspend/resume the system?

I don't remember, I'll have this in mind now.

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard input strangely slow.

awk '/xkb_symbols/{print $2}' /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/br
grep -i caps /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.lst # for your caps lock option

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard input strangely slow.

Hi, thanks for reminding me about the capslock option, I changed it and I believe it's better, I'll remove my keymaps script, maybe it somehow is causing the trouble.
I restarted the xorg server rather then rebooting and for confirmation: the keyboard input gets fixed by restarting the server as well.
I'll see whether the problem comes back or not.

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard input strangely slow.

It got back pretty quick (I got it, then restarted, then it got back again in maybe less than 30 minutes),
I'll remove my mouse and just use the touchpad, in case that might be it.

here's the xorg log:

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard input strangely slow.

This is nonsense and you can just remove that entry

[ 19.483] (**) Option "xkb_model" "abnt2"

What exactly "got back"?
The xorg log shows nothing, then a touchpad jump.
The keyboard doesn't reconnect and the keyboard server config should maintain the variant and caps mapping anyway.

Removed.

What exactly "got back"?

The problem showed up again.
I just checked now: restarted xorg, keyboard input still slow, rebooted, keyboard input still slow; now the problem is showing up immediately. Might not be associated with the xorg server.

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard input strangely slow.

What's the metric for "slow"?
Does it respond "slow" in "xev -event keyboard"? "sudo libinput debug-events"? "sudo evtest"?

Re: [SOLVED] Keyboard input strangely slow.

What's the metric for "slow"?

I believe I didn't express the idea of the problem well, I apologize (I realised it 20 minutes ago).
The slowish shows when I hold down a key (example: when I press the "w" key, it instantaneously inputs "w"; while: when I hold down "w", a single "w" gets instantaneously inputted, then nothing happens for about 1 second, then a sequence of "w"(s) get inputted in the screen, but in a slow cadence, it happens with any key, including the arrow keys).

edit: I figured out about the "xset r rate [delay [rate]]", I used it and the "keyboard hold" got fast again, but I still don't know why it got spontaneously slow, or if it's even the right path to fix it.
