I installed arch recently, and I haven't set anything up yet. When I boot into the tty, it just gave me a black screen. When I removed kms from the HOOKS array and regenerated the initramfs, displayed normally. I think I want to use kms, but I can't because of this. What's wrong?

First off, if you're using nouveau, you're always using KMS. The kms hook just sets up KMS in early userspace, it's a workaround for DMs starting before the driver is ready. It's not something that's really required.
We'll need a log from a boot that had the problem. Use journalctl's -b option.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Nouvea … tput_issue is a somewhat common cause, the logs might give a hint about it if it is the case.
