[Solved] System Stops Responding After sg Driver Oops

I'm trying to get arch working on my video server, a beelink ser 3, with a pulse8 HDMI-CEC dongle and a cheap usb-sata adapter with a bluray drive on it. Unfortunately, the bluray drive crashes the scsi driver every now and then. On my old, non-arch installation this wasn't a problem. But on my arch install, when sg fails, the cec driver seems to either crash or just stop working, then the rest of the system stops responding in stages -- the display may freeze (though the sound keeps working), systemctl and journalctl attempts hang, and eventually the network connection goes down.

I haven't been able to find much useful information on the web. I did run memtest86 from a live iso -- eight passes showed no problems, for what that's worth. This is a journal showing a crash of both the sg and cec drivers. Usually it's just one or the other. I had dozens of journals, but I made a stupid miskey and deleted the whole system yesterday, so I'm starting from scratch today.

I set up the HDMI-CEC from the wiki, but I also tried running the commands from the shell, just for fun. No change.

I've tried running without lsm and nvme_core in the kernel parameters. I remember trying usbcore.autosuspend=-1. Unfortunately, I lost the records of the other parameters I tried. They were mostly uninformed guesses.

I'm less concerned with fixing the drivers than with trying to make the system more stable even when something does crash, though I realize that's a tall order. Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: This may not belong in newbie corner, but I haven't used arch in years, so I'm probably making newbie mistakes. Please move it if appropriate.

Edit: I still don't know how to harden the system against driver errors, but I managed to stop the disc reader errors by replacing the stock usb3 cable with an old usb2 cable I had. I guess either the new cable is bad, or the adapter just can't handle usb3 (despite their advertising).
