[Gnome Desktop] How to remember/restore window positions?

Hello,

I have a sticky notes app installed and put this app into the auto start by gnome-tweaks. Unfortunately GNOME doesn't restore the windows on the position it was closed. Is there is simple solution for doing this? Thanks!

I use the Another Window Session Manager GNOME Shell extension. It's also available in the AUR as gnome-shell-extension-another-window-session-manager-git.

Thanks. Another Window Session Manager doesn't work well. It restores the apps but not the positions although all position data are written correctly in the the config file. :-/

Re: [Gnome Desktop] How to remember/restore window positions?

Clients typically re/store/force size and position when starting.
If you cannot specify the geometry for whatever the "sticky notes app" is, you'll have to rely on window manager rules (always treat the window name "sticky notes app" this way) or use an external tool for that (eg. for X11 xdotool can wait for a client and then manipulate it once it shows up)

For gnome on wayland, you're probably fucked.
https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/ydotool-git - but just from the wayland design this will have severe limits and afaict only emulates input (and has to run as root, basically undermining all wAyLaNd iS BeTtEr sEcUrE claims…)

Re: [Gnome Desktop] How to remember/restore window positions?

About, the GNOME Shell extension "Another Window Session Manager" (AWSM) at https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/ … n-manager/ For this extension to fully work, I needed to both install and configure the package "ydotool" at https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/ydotool/

Steps to install and configure ydotool for AWSM are under the title "How to make Close by rules work" at https://github.com/nlpsuge/gnome-shell- … rules-work Those steps needs to be adapted appropriately for Arch Linux.

There is a one time initial learning curve to AWSM. But after that, with only 2 clicks I'm able to open most apps with their windows automatically moved to the appropriate workspace. Also, automatically remember the size of most of those windows.

@Francewhoa: FYI, I already include the udev rule in my gnome-shell-extension-another-window-session-manager-git AUR package.

The OP has not been back since November 2023, so I am going to consider this thread abandoned and close it now.
