I connect using iwd, and haven't installed NetworkManager. From command line things work just fine as this old machine runs mostly in multi-user mode, and occasionally Gnome.
When in gnome settings, the network section shows a freightningly laud screen that says 'Netowk Unavailable' as NetworkManager is not runninng - even when connected. The systray also doesn't show any network applet.
Does Gnome work only with NM? Does it not work with systemd networkiig / iwd etc? When I try to install network-manager-applet, it tries to bring in neworkmanager as a dependency. NetworkManager is something I really do not need or want.
Are there any gui tools/applets that work with systemd directly?

Basically all of the GUI's come with NetworkManager integration. You can configure NetworkManager to use iwd instead of wpa_supplicant. The only other GUI I know of that includes direct iwd support is conman. But none of these are going to be as integrated into an environment as stuff based on NetworkManager (... because networkmanager provides a stable API to develop interfaces against, most other solutions do not)

Thanks. I disabled iwd / systemd-networkd, installed & enabled NetworkManager + wpa_supplicant servies, and the network is up and running. _/\_

You should not explicitly enable wpa_supplicant, NetworkManager will invoke that itself.
