Gnome freezes when login and want to know how to debug it properly

I am using sddm as my login screen and I use kde and gnome and hyprland. I dont have issue with hyprland or kde but some times (say 5 out of 10 times) when I try to login into gnome the screen freezes at sddm login screen. I dont have problems with hyprland or kde but only with gnome.

Upon doing some research online it seems mostly cause of  extensions. These are the extensions I use

$ gnome-extensions list
blur-my-shell@aunetx
transparent-top-bar@ftpix.com
enhancedosk@cass00.github.io
dash-to-dock@micxgx.gmail.com
apps-menu@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
auto-move-windows@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
drive-menu@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
launch-new-instance@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
light-style@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
native-window-placement@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
places-menu@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
screenshot-window-sizer@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
user-theme@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
window-list@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
windowsNavigator@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
workspace-indicator@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com
appindicatorsupport@rgcjonas.gmail.com

however when I disabled extensions the login seems to work fine. I rebooted 5 times after disabling extensions and the problem is not there so mostly extensions are the reason.

I did  only enabled one extension and still the freeze happened a couple of time out of 5 reboots and logins. So it seem the extensions are not the issue and gnome i the issue?

However I found a workaround that is before going into gnome i  login into kde and use this following command.

gsettings set org.gnome.shell disable-user-extensions true

After running this command I logout and login into gnome and everything is working fine.

I put this command in .zlogin and

gsettings set org.gnome.shell disable-user-extensions false

command in .zlogout but directly login into gnome after these files is not working. Only going into kde and running command manually seems to work.

So how do I run this command if possible if it is the solution. Also how do I know if .zlogin and .zlogout commands are being executed at login and logout as I using zsh.

Any other way to debug it as when I searched someone said journalctl logs will help but I dont know how to debug with it.

So any help is welcome

Re: Gnome freezes when login and want to know how to debug it properly

Is maybe only the first login affected?
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=292959

Also how do I know if .zlogin and .zlogout commands are being executed at login and logout as I using zsh

Have them do something obvious like "notify-send tada"

By first login into gnome yes. I mean once I login into gnome, I can login and logout multiple times.

I put notify-send tada to both .zlogin and .zlogout and when I login and logout nothinf happened. I am doing this correct?

Re: Gnome freezes when login and want to know how to debug it properly

Probably - depending on how the gnome session is started, .zlogin might plausibly not be sourced at all.
However wrt. " once I login into gnome, I can login and logout multiple times" this is probably not relevant at all. Also "gsettings set org.gnome.shell disable-user-extensions false" should be permanent anyway.

There seems to be an early gnome issue, you might want to subscribe to the other thread and also post a system journal to illustrate your HW and general setup.
It's not clear why this happens and there might also be different artifacts at play. Do you have an AMD GPU?

Re: Gnome freezes when login and want to know how to debug it properly

It seems extensions are not the issue cause I just had a freeze even with extension disabled. It seems it is with gnome itself. I never had this issue until gnome 44. KDE and Hyprland works without any issue. I use sddm but I had issues with gdm too when login. I will see if I can debug more and find the solution.
