Hey everyone, I ran a normal system upgrade yesterday (pacman -Syu / yay -Syu) which included the plasma 6 changes unfortunately I can no longer get past the sddm login screen with this new update.
I checked my journalctl log: https://imgur.com/a/qwqwJtI
But after digging through all the logs I'm still at a lost as to what is causing the login to fail, I have tried both x11 and wayland and both fail to login, I also tried setting the sddm theme to default but that didn't help either since I was seeing some errors related to the theme in the logs.
I restored my system with timeshift today since I need a functioning PC but I would really like to be able to keep this system through this upgrade.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hi, I faced something similar, but I had to do some more tinkering (regenerate mkinitcpio and fstab) after restoring the timeshift backup because I also did some repartitioning. In your case, since you have a working machine after the timeshift restore, I would suggest replacing sddm with gdm or lightdm and then upgrading to Plasma 6 again. SDDM also has some incompatibilities with the new Plasma 6 and it fails to load themes, returning to the default breeze theme during each login.
1. Enable gdm and disable sddm
2. update with sudo pacman -Syu to upgrade back to Plasma 6
3. Reboot
We'll need to wait till sddm issues are fixed. If changing the display manager doesn't fix the issue, it may not be related to sddm.

Please don't post pictures of text, post the text.
You can upload the system journal by eg.
sudo journalctl -b | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st
As for sddm, post
pacman -Qikk sddm
(several users showed up w/ dated versions of sddm-git from the AUR …)

Hey thanks for letting me know how to upload text this way I had no idea, at the time this was the only way I knew of capturing the logs.
Here's the package info for ssdm: https://0x0.st/Hhvg.txt

Just for clarification the current version of sddm on my system is the one from my timeshift image before I tried updating to plasma 6, this wasn't the version at the time the bug occurred.

Ok, but we'd need to see the information from the actually affected system.
Inspecting a working system won't help at all.

In my case there was a /etc/pam.d/kde.conf.pacnew, though checking the differences this only ensured to allow local login and instead of general system and shouldn't have an inherent negative effect if unhandled, but did you get a similar pacnew and what are the differences in your case? Though that particular pam config should afaik only be relevant for the unlocking of an existing session by means of kscreenlock

Yeah I get that sorry for the confusion, I ran the system update again today after making sure all my themes were set to breeze and I'm getting the same issues. Here's the journalctl logs from the affected system: https://0x0.st/Hh0v.txt

Yeah I also had the same file, it doesn't seem to make any difference in my case even if I use the new changes.

Also after attempting the update again I am now getting an error message on the login screen that wasn't present before, https://imgur.com/a/MBomrwS apologies for the picture there's no way to copy the text from the ui.

There's no trace of an attempt to log in using SDDM, did you?

But that's already on the TTY3 login, you still probably want to fix that.

That's kservice5, you somehow lack https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/kservice/ - though it seems dependency for a whole lot of KDE stuff…

Yeah just update kservice and I'm making some progress, now it seems I can login with x11 but the plasma session doesn't work and Wayland still isn't working. Here are the logs after getting into an x11 session: https://0x0.st/HhG_.txt
