[SOLVED] Lost notifications after plasma6/kde update

Before the last plasma6 update, I would get notifications for things like scheduled shutdown.

After the update, I get nothing.

Where should I look? all my searches didn't even get me closer to the right terms.

Generally on plasma you need the "notification widget" visible on some plasma panel somewhere, is that the case (by default it would be in the system tray of the main panel, also check in those settings whether it's unticked or so)? Does

notify-send Hi

work?

Notifications seem to work fine. I think they changed the defaults (filters?) for system notices.

notify-send Hi

Works. I also get browser download etc.

But not shutdown as i got before.

Ah right, so probably  wall messages I.e. what you'd get with the "wall Hello" command? I distinctly remember seeing that yesterday, but might have to check your notification settings.

Re: [SOLVED] Lost notifications after plasma6/kde update

ah ofcourse. haven't heard "wall" for a long time smile that's it. don't know why i was expecting those messages today were delivered via dbus by systemd-localmessaged or something.

A quick search shows that there's "kwrited" package which bridges wall to kde. I have it installed.

And then that is controlled in KDE notification settings as coming from a "Local System Message Service" application. And I also have that enabled to show popups. But still nothing.

also, seems the systemd ppl is happy fiddling with have or not wall messages in some cases https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/23574 (and my systemd-localmessaged joke seems to the be plan hmm)

Re: [SOLVED] Lost notifications after plasma6/kde update

That was done at that point in time because they posted it on every suspend cycle which spammed logs and notification daemons everywhere, and they've since reduced it again to more sensible invocations. This will not have a bearing on the current situation. Is KWriteD actually enabled in System Settings -> Start & Stop (or so, paraphrased?) I'm not on my plasma but i definitely got the shutdown notification yesterday

Re: [SOLVED] Lost notifications after plasma6/kde update

and of course it was disabled. thank you! that was it.

So, to get system notifications on KDE:

1. install kwrited
2. enable it in "system > session > background services". Called "Write daemon".
3. under notification, click "per application setting", find "Local System Message Service", make sure there's visual and/or sound.

phew.
