After the recent change to the microcode hook, so I followed the advice on the forums and
1. added the microcode hook to the HOOKS section of mkinitcpio.conf
2. added
3. ran both mkinitcpio -P and grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
The result is that my system does not boot anymore. The booting starts, then "Welcome to GRUB!" flashes for a very short split second, and then it crashes and reboots.
I have no idea how I managed to create this problem, I must have messed up on some of the steps or perhaps there were some problems with grub.cfg that became but help is greatly appreciated.
Details on system: Dell 5620 Tower, UEFI boot, default linux kernel

Thanks!
Indeed I had missed that update and the needed grub re-installation.
Now Grub boots, even though I can't get into the GUI---probably due to the recent issues with nvdia and plasma.
will look into that next
