Have made changes to remove initrd options for microcode in grub.cfg qnd ran grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Added microhook to mkinitcpio.conf and updatede initcpio
mkinitcpio -p linux
After reboot it looks like grub has added back in /boot/amd-ucode.img to iniitrd
Still have /boot/amd-ucode.img present [which is still part of amd-ucode package]
Little confused ;-(

Please post your mkinitcpio.conf, /boot/grub/grub.cfg and /etc/default/grub - generally the mkinitcpio.conf has little to no impact on grub.cfg
Did you remove the ALL_microcode entries in /etc/mkinitcpio.d/linux*.preset

Can see microcode in linux.preset.... which I will remove.

grub-mkconfig can find ucodes itself and has a predefined list:
GRUB_EARLY_INITRD_LINUX_STOCK="intel-uc.img intel-ucode.img amd-uc.img amd-ucode.img early_ucode.cpio microcode.cpio"
Add
GRUB_EARLY_INITRD_LINUX_STOCK=""
to your /etc/default/grub - it should™ override the defaults and your present ucode gets ignored.

Ok, made the changes and run mkinicpio and grub-mkconfig.. rebooted, amd-ucode.img is no longer in initrd [grub]
