The boot screen for my existing installation freezes at mounting boot, mounting tmp, or shortly after. It will hang for a minute, video drops and case fans go 100%. There are no issues when booting from iso on usb.
I have chrooted and reinstalled all packages, reinstalled and updated systemd-boot, verified boot options, regenerated fstab, disabled greetd service. i cant figure out why it is hanging, and could use some guidance.

I added debug kernel param. I now have more messages displayed on the boot screen. It consistently stops near messages about my video card. Could my r9 380 video card be the problem? I have an hd5450 that I could swap with to test the theory out.

Can you still boot
1. the multi-user.target (2nd link below)
2. along "nomodeset"? (your GUI won't work with that)
3. The LTS kernel ? ("i chrooted"…)

Well, I'm looking at hyprland right now. I swapped in the hd5450. No video. I didn't have high hopes as it was in my room and my family has tossed it on the floor. I put the r9 380 back in and it works. The r9 380 has mold on it. 135 year old neglected house has mold everywhere. Issue is either the graphics card or the motherboard. Marking as solved.
