[SOLVED] After Upgrading: xfce4 & vlc is not working

Hi
Everything was fine before the update!

1. I just upgraded... and cannot run xfce4, only lines; whilst lxqt & mate work.

2. Also in vlc the same distorted lines appear:

vlc file.mp4
VLC media player 3.0.20 Vetinari (revision 3.0.20-0-g6f0d0ab126b)
[00005c2e50af6550] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
[000078bd18001f70] glconv_vaapi_x11 gl error: vaInitialize: unknown libva error
[000078bd30c2c0e0] avcodec decoder: Using Intel iHD driver for Intel(R) Gen Graphics - 24.1.4 () for hardware decoding

I tried some solutions on web; but to no avail! What should I test?

Thank you

cannot run xfce4, only lines

What exacty does that mean?

glxinfo -B
vainfo # likely "libva error: vaGetDriverNameByIndex() failed with unknown libva error, driver_name = (null)"

and please post your Xorg log, https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Xorg#General

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: [SOLVED] After Upgrading: xfce4 & vlc is not working

inxi suggests it's a hybrid system and glxinfo that you're running on the AMD chip.
The dated xorg log has xf86-video-intel, if you've that package installed, remove it.

Then please post the relevant X11 log.

Hi, I tested this... by removing xf86-video-intel, but then the desktop doesnt starts at all.

Actually I couldnt configure amd, nor was using it before the last upgrade!

Let me try again ... if this works!

Thankyou

removing xf86-video-intel, but then the desktop doesnt starts at all

You're referencing it in some config file.

grep -ri intel /{etc,usr/share}/X11/xorg.conf*

Still post the xorg log.

Hi,

# grep -ri intel {etc,usr/share}/X11/xorg.conf*
etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf: Driver "intel"

It seems after upgrade both the cards are conflicting; probably because I upgraded after a gap probalbly!

Re: [SOLVED] After Upgrading: xfce4 & vlc is not working

Remove xf86-video-intel as well as that /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor.conf config file

Re: [SOLVED] After Upgrading: xfce4 & vlc is not working

And because of the glxinfo output ./. your xorg log,

printenv

You're running glxinfo on the AMD chip but some config (possibly the one you're about to remove) limits the X11 server to the intel chip.

Hi
This worked... but I want to discuss: xbacklight doesnt works now!

xbacklight =50
No outputs have backlight property

I did this edit a long time ago...

cat 10-monitor.conf
Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "eDP1"
# Modeline "1024x768_60.00" 63.50 1024 1072 1176 1328 768 771 775 798 -hsync +vsync
    Modeline "1024x768" 63.50 1024 1072 1176 1328 768 771 775 798 -hsync +vsync
    Option "PreferredMode" "1280x1024_60.00"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Monitor "eDP1"
    DefaultDepth 24
    SubSection "Display"
# Modes "1280x1024_60.00"
        Modes "1280x1024"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Device0"
    Driver "intel"
EndSection

I think this was´nt a problem in previous updates!

Thank you

Hi
Just a quick glance ... xfce4, xrandr and vlc are now working.

But xbacklight is not!

Thank you

Re: [SOLVED] After Upgrading: xfce4 & vlc is not working

remove xorg-xbacklight, and install acpilight instead, add your user to the video group, and continue using xbacklight (now provided by acpilight which doesn't have the drawbacks of xorg-xbacklight)

Re: [SOLVED] After Upgrading: xfce4 & vlc is not working

Your environment does't suggest you're using prime (by default) - does glxinfo still show the AMD chip?
