[Solved] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config. amdgpu

Hi.

Since yesterday's update I have no output in my two display port connected monitors.

I boot directly into console (no login manager) and usually start my bspwm session through xinit, although have also installed Plasma and Gnome Desktop environments.

AMD Ryzen 7 5700X
Radeon RX 6600
07:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Navi 23 [Radeon RX 6600/6600 XT/6600M] (rev c7)
amdgpu

I can SSH to the machine.

So far, I've tried downgrading some suspicious packages, reconnecting display ports, disabling ErP Ready in BIOS, trimming to minimum the xorg.conf.d/ file, reinstalling amdgpu, mkinitcpio, grub rebuild, booting with amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff...

Below are the logs, steps and config files, but relevant bits (to me at least) are:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

(EE) AMDGPU(0): No modes.
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
(EE) no screens found(EE)

¿Any help or tip?

Thank you.

I've tried booting with amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff getting the value with

printf 'amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0x%x\n' "$(($(cat /sys/module/amdgpu/parameters/ppfeaturemask) | 0x4000))"

No luck.

/etc/modprobe.d/amdgpu.conf

blacklist radeon
blacklist fglrx
options amdgpu audio=0 dc=0 video=DP-1:2560x1440@75

The video option is no longer recognized, but I haven't had any issues with it:

amdgpu: unknown parameter 'video' ignored

Tried a minimal xorg.conf just with

Re: [Solved] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config. amdgpu

Drop all of your xorg confs, let autodetect figure it out, and recheck with xrandr whether your monitors got renamed (... can happen on kernel/xf86-video-amdgpu updates)

Re: [Solved] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config. amdgpu

Thank you V1del.

I don't even have monitors detected in tty, before X, but the possible change of output names is a good clue.

I've tried removing x settings, and -blindly- launch xinit script. No luck. Same "Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration." in Xorg.0.log.

But I took a look to the EDID entry in wiki and found that I have no edid under sys/class/drm/*/ so it seems something is wrong with edid.

Re: [Solved] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config. amdgpu

options amdgpu audio=0 dc=0 video=DP-1:2560x1440@75

Remove that, add "initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init" to the https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Kernel_parameters and post an updated xorg log and a complete system journal.

LTS and 6.8 are both affected?

Re: [Solved] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config. amdgpu

Thanks seth,
just tried removing the kernel params and booted with initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init.
Same result.

The same problem is present booting the LTS kernel.

Re: [Solved] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config. amdgpu

Oh, something new.

Following the seth's advice and booting into the 6.6.22-1 kernel I have a console :-)

And xinit also works!

Re: [Solved] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config. amdgpu

So it's most likely a 6.8 regression (and you won't have to test "nomodeset")

sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

for the previous boot.

Re: [Solved] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config. amdgpu

Well.
Both monitors are visible in tty, but the second one doesn't show in X.

I have a lots of

[ 119.654] (WW) AMDGPU(0): flip queue failed: Invalid argument
[ 119.654] (WW) AMDGPU(0): Page flip failed: Invalid argument
[ 119.654] (EE) AMDGPU(0): present flip failed

in .local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log

Tried to boot again into 6.8.1-arch1-1 and got the same: both monitors visible in tty, but the second one doesn't show in X.

The outputs that weren't available before in sys/class/drm are present now:

So it's most likely a 6.8 regression (and you won't have to test "nomodeset")

sudo journalctl -b -1 | curl -F 'file=@-' 0x0.st

for the previous boot.

I did a -b -2 because a booted again before reading your message:

journal log

Re: [Solved] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config. amdgpu

Tried to boot again into 6.8.1-arch1-1 and got the same: both monitors visible in tty, but the second one doesn't show in X.

With tha development your xorg log just became more interesting tongue
Did you check "xrandr -q" for whether the second output is actually there but just not activated?
Are the outputs daisy-chained ("PC -> Monitor1 -> Monitor2" rather than "Monitor1 <- PC -> Monitor2")?

I tried to reconnect the second one (DisplayPort-1).

Also launched arandr. Both monitor are shown, but the DisplayPort-1 is grayed, although marked as "active". Trying to apply the config returns

XrandR returned error code 1: 'xranrdr: Configure crtc 0 failed'

Each monitor is connected to a different display port into the card, so I think, the second? smile

Re: [Solved] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config. amdgpu

Well, I launched plasma and got both monitors working.

So it has to be related to the naming of monitors and the bspwm config. I will address that later.

Thank you very much smile

Is the initcall_blacklist=simpledrm_platform_driver_init boot param sort of a permanent solution?
Do you know if it has side effects?

Re: [Solved] Screen(s) found, but none have a usable config. amdgpu

It disables the simpledrm device that you don't want to use anyway (it mostly exists because wayland doesn't work w/o drm and ubuntu and fedora users cannot fix their system w/o a GUI tongue)
You can try to re-allow it and see whether it was related at all.

The explicit 75Hz modes are deliberate and unrelated?

Ja! Great then.

Deliberated smile
The first monitor is an HP Omen 240Hz and the second a Lenovo capable of 75Hz, so I have each one with its corresponding refresh rate and working fine.

Thank you very much one more time for your help cool
