Higher sound priority possible?

Is it possible to give music playback a higher priority?
My mp3 playback (xmms at the moment) hangs for a split second everytime I open a new tab in firefox, and it's driving me crazy. This is, of course, also due to the fact that my computer is basically prehistoric, but there ought to be some way of fixing this in the vast repositories of awesome that are the Linux way. And I'd like to make it kinda global, not just re-nice my xmms (even though I don't even know if that would work. I don't feel qualified to touch the nice level of running processes).

I always roll 20s on my disbelieve checks.
You better believe it.

You can try raising the buffer for the output plugin if that's the case, what desktop do you use?

Fluxbox.
However, it's not an issue anymore, since Amarok doesn't have this problem, even though I always thought xmms used less resources. Go figure.
