I am using lf file manager and have custom icons for it.
I have a .png image which I want to use for some categories. How do I properly paste that .png icon to my rc config file?
I have xclip installed on my system.

Lf has icons?? It's a terminal file manager. What icons are you referring to?

you can have your custom icons for different file extensions

I'm assuming what you actually mean is fonts that look like icons/emojis and what you're actually looking for is a way to make your custom image a custom font code point to include.
You'd probably have to edit your favorite font and massacre an unused code point. Admittedly not my strong suit either but look into fontforge/this tutorial: https://fontforge.org/docs/techref/autotrace.html

You don't. Period.
I see that LF does have something it calls "icons", but it does not use images like pngs. It only uses character glyphs / emojis. You put the glyph you want displayed in your icons file. You need to find / create a font with a glyph similar to that png image as V1del described.

So what I need is a font which contains the glyph that I want?

Yes.

where do I start looking for it?

The internet.
Or if you want a good strategy - actually read post #4.
Realistically, though, I'd recommend looking through the emojis available in the font you are currently using and just pick one you like.
