Arch Linux logos on wikipedia?

I was wondering if the authors of Arch logos (the ones from http://www.archlinux.org/art/) could upload (one of) them to http://commons.wikimedia.org/ to use it on Wikipedias or give permisson to do so under PD or GFDL license. In Poland there is no fair use "license", so it has to be one of these.

Note the email address at the bottom of the page. That is the fellow you need to get in touch with.

Re: Arch Linux logos on wikipedia?

IIRC I mailed him about year ago and got no answer. Is Judd really the author of these logos? You know, his e-mail is on a bottom of every page of archlinux.org.

He is not the author of all images on that page. At least some are definetely created by other authors (I'm 100% sure about "Arch with star" logo and first CD label).

The tango styled Arch logo is maded by BigBadPenguin. I did some changes to them and posted it in this thread which then led to this:

BigBadPenguin wrote:

@PJ: Fantastic work! I won't recreate, it, let's just say you've adopted them shall we? The GDM and CD covers are great too, continue to use the logos as you see fit. Strictly speaking the shadow should be centred, if we're following the Tango style specs, so if you wanted to keep working on them that would be the next thing to fix I guess.

So am I responsible for these now? It sure doesn't feel like that.

I am not sure if it is that easy, or it might just be me making it to complicated, I really don't know at the moment. The tango icon is based on this official logo:

I guess there might be some license violations if the official logo is released under a more restricted license, which I honestly don't know if it is. I am actually working on a new logo which is also based on the same official logo. If I was sure that I wasn't violating any licenses, I could release it under one of those licenses, but I am not sure if I would violate any kind of licenses and that makes it harder to release it under a specific license.

This is far from done but at least it's a preview. The text needs more work at least. If I remove the text it will be usable.

3D is good, but it looks like all you did is bevel it, and honestly you choose a boring camera angle to portray it from too.

How about a real 3D contruction of the logo itself, maybe made out of a tapered tube or something? And some effects might be welcome too.

I never did mention it earlier but the artwork is actually made in Inkscape which is a 2D vector graphics editor. I know that I could have chosen a 3D program like Blender, and I might try that if I ever do any more graphics, but that's not the point. The point is that I did this artwork mainly because I wanted to see if it was possible and because I wanted it to be a more 3d version of the tango icons style. Doing this in Inkscape was not that easy because AFAIK Inkscape doesn't have tools or script which can create bevels.

How the final version looks like:

Some more stuff with this artwork:

Re: Arch Linux logos on wikipedia?

That looks a lot better. Some subtle differences of proportion and changes to the lighting make a world of difference.

And now that you point it out I can see now it's not a 3D render, and I am additionally appreciative of your skills in inkscape, even though my criticisms of the first still stand.

As for inkscape not having a bevel tool, that's too bad. If you haven't already, give the excellent XaraLX in [unstable] a try sometime, the bevel tool in the program is extremely easy to use and gives good results.

Given the lack thereof in inkscape however, I am rather curious how you created the effect.

Thanks.
I might not change the camera angle for this artwork and I see your point why I should do that. This is mainly because I rather move forward and try making new artworks than fixing big errors in old stuff done by me. This is a big error because it requeries me to redo the complete image. Small errors usually aren't that hard to fix and I am trying to do those. But changing the camera angle IS to much work, you will see when I am explaining how the effect was created.

I am going use your advace when I am creating new stuff.

I have tried XaraLX (and the bevel tool) a month ago and I like the program. Only problem that I had with XaraLX was that it seemed a bit to unstable at that time, I will however try it again in a near future.

I am a bit busy at the moment and I really don't have time to write a decent explanition now. As soon as I have done that I will put it somewhere on the internet, I can send a pm when it's uploaded.
