Hi folks. Im struggling to get direct rendering working, and have tried to search the forum to find my answer but so far no joy. Its a fresh install of Gimmick
I did find this thread, which seems related possibly, but wondered if going by the last post in there it was no longer an issue.

What happens when you issue "modprobe fglrx" from the command line?
Offline
First of all is the drm initialized during boot? (dmesg | grep drm). If there is an error follow this thread.
Offline
modprobe fglrx:
FATAL: Module fglrx not found
Which is clearly not too good.
dmesg | grep drm issues not info
Offline
ati-fglrx and ati-fglrx-utils are installed and up to date
Offline
What kernel are you using? Can you do
uname -r
ls /lib/modules
find /lib/modules -name fglrx.ko
Offline
Im using 2.6.16-ARCH, but the module is in 2.6.19-ARCH, going by commands you gave me to run. I wasnt aware of doing anything other than using pacman to download it?
Offline
Well, we assume that you keep your system up-to-date - the kernel modules in [extra] are built only for the current kernel in [current] and [extra] - when the kernel package updates, so does the module package.
You'll need to either update your kernel to 2.6.19 (and check the frontpage and search the forum for piix - some issues around that. Also make sure you've moved to mkinitcpio and changed your initrd param of your bootloader correctly) or build a version of fglrx for your older kernel version, which you can find out how to do by reading the wiki ABS and ATI fglrx pages.
Offline
Ok my bad. My first attempt with linux really at this level, so the keeping up to date was overlooked slightly. At least ive learned a lesson. Thanks for your help mate.
Offline
Glad to be of assistance. You'll soon find yourself really familiar with stuff, I remember when I first started with Arch... I was pretty bad.
Offline
Ok, i finally got upgraded and back into openbox and direct rendering is now enabled. I had an AIGLX error so turned off AIGLX and no more error. I presume that, even though AIGLX claims to resort back to software rendering i still actually have hardware rendering on my system?
The remaining Warning i have is:
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:5:1) found
and was curious as to how i resolve this.
Offline
This is a very common warning and can be ignored - it means you don't have a device section for possibly a second-head on you video card or something of that sort. Definitely non-critical in any case.
Offline
Thanks again mate. Lovin the speed of arch+openbox
merry christmas
